The academy asked guests to dress sustainably.

Red carpet events typically have us seeing our favorite celebrities in custom designer gowns, but this year’s British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs) took a turn for the sustainable route. For its 73rd annual awards, it asked attendees to “dress sustainably.”

Naturally, BAFTA's president, Prince William, graced the event with his presence, arriving arm-in-arm with wife Kate Middleton. Not one to miss out on a fashion moment, the Duchess of Cambridge donned an Alexander McQueen gown, which she last wore in Malaysia for the 2012 Diamond Jubilee Royal Tour of South East Asia.

The regal gown was especially made for her appearance in Malaysia, and it aptly featured embroidered, golden hibiscus flowers, the country's national flower. Although the dress was made eight years ago, it's the design's classic sensibility that still makes it fresh today. We're talking empire cut, cream color, and sweetheart neckline.

When the Duchess donned the frock back in 2012, as seen above, she chose minimal accessories and opted for a golden clutch to complement her dress. This time, Kate updated her look by adding striking accessories. She wore Van Cleef Arpels jewelry that featured the brand's iconic Alhambra four-leaf clover motif. Her Magic Alhambra necklace and matching earrings are made with yellow gold and mother-of-pearl.

She finished off the look with a dazzling pair of Fireball Glitter Degrade pumps from Jimmy Choo

The 73rd BAFTA awards was held at the Royal Albert Hall. To guide guests as to what exactly "dressing sustainably" means, the academy released a comprehensive brief about sustainable fashion: "This awards season BAFTA are doing more than ever before to consider sustainability across its awards ceremonies, including inviting guests to ‘dress sustainably.’ To help navigate some of the issues around fashion and sustainability London College of Fashion, University of the Arts London (UAL) [is] supporting BAFTA with more information on how you can dress sustainably. This handy style guide encourages us to make different fashion choices and be a voice for change."
