Jolina Magdangal and Marvin Agustin on the Enduring Magic of Love Teams

On the tail of their much-awaited comeback film, Marvin and Jolina reflect on their reign as '90s icons and the love team culture that’s ruled Philippine showbiz for decades.

Few people could describe a personal “rock star” moment in their lifetimes, but for Jolina Magdangal and Marvin Agustin, the scene played out like a movie clip in their minds.

At the peak of their popularity in the late 1990s, the two actors were on their way to a show at a sprawling mall in Ortigas, a routine event to tick off in an artista’s promotional schedule. However, as circumstances would have it, they were barred from entering the building.

Guguho ang restaurant! Guguho ang Megamall!” Marvin exclaimed, in between a laughing fit. No natural forces prompted the “earthquake” bound to happen, but only the presence of Marvin and Jolina, whose teenybopper visages and puppy-love-like chemistry drew out the screams of a packed crowd. “Hindi kami pinapasok–” he said, to which Jolina interjected: “Kasi delikado.” “Kasi nagpa-pandemonium na sa loob,” Marvin added.

They were nostalgia-gazing, sure, but two decades on, the sounds of fans’ giddy excitement somehow broke the space-time continuum. These days, they’ve time-traveled: Marvin and Jolina were back in the whirlwind as a pairing for their comeback film Ex Ex Lovers, with interviews, photoshoots, and theater tours lining their to-do lists. The difference seemed to be a new consciousness, as the two had pushed and broken the fourth wall. Their film and promotional material are peppered with '90s references like brightly-colored “if-you-know-you-know” nudges, like a great homage to the turn of the millennium and the loud love team culture that has long powered the industry.

Behind the scenes, people are quick to catch their new fond nickname for each other: “Labtim.” The love team frenzy had sparked once again for the pair, alive and running just as it knew and will always know how–a thing that’s second nature in the local scene’s so-called business of show.

Two of a Kind
Just as many love teams that have come before and after them, Marvin and Jolina’s eventual pairing began as a product of chance. Before the pairing now known as “MarJo” came to be, Jolina had already accumulated acting credits as a child star, with her role in the youth-oriented series Ang TV as a launch pad for her influential presence in the industry.

Jolina and Marvin, the latter a relative newcomer in the business then, had chanced upon each other in ABS-CBN’s Sunday musical variety show ASAP, filmed in the old Delta Theater in Quezon City, where many now-big-name stars were huddled in one dressing room.

Soon enough, Marvin and Jolina were paired for the variety show’s segment, and things clicked. The audience’s warm reaction brought them roles in the teen drama series Gimik, which starred an ensemble cast with the likes of Judy Ann Santos, Rico Yan, Diether Ocampo, G. Toengi, and Mylene Dizon. Later on, this translated to their own top-billing roles in films like 1997’s Flames: The Movie and 1998’s Labs Kita Okey Ka Lang, with dialogue that became earworms in pop culture’s consciousness.

And then, they were everywhere. The Philippine TV- and movie-going public had latched on to these fresh-faced figures and their on-screen relationship that reflected the idyllic and sweet side of romance, innocent in ways, yet tinged with a hint of requisite drama. In the aptest of terms, they were a phenomenon, catapulting their careers as actors, which had resulted in busses shaken by the thrum of fans and school stationery plastered with their faces.

The case, however, was different prior to their eventual team-up. “Ako nga, sinabihan na three years lang daw ako sa industriya,” Marvin recalled. “Hindi raw ako katangkaran, hindi ako kapogian. Tapos, 'pag pinagtabi ako kina Diether at kina Patrick (Garcia), mukha raw akong PA (personal assistant),” he laughed. “So ayun, tuwang-tuwa ako na hanggang ngayon, sa panahon na ito, kami pa rin ni Labtim.

But like most pairings, Marvin and Jolina’s love team had also run its course in its time in the limelight. Years went on, and the call of nostalgia had craved a reunion. The project, years in the making and delayed by circumstances, eventually came into reality as Ex Ex Lovers, helmed by recent years’ romance regulars, director JP Habac and screenwriters Antoinette Jadaone and Kristine Gabriel. A far cry from their roles as the industry’s youngins, the film posits the leading pair as an estranged husband and wife, whose grown-up daughter’s (played by Loisa Andalio) impending marriage to Juan Karlos Labajo’s character compels them to reunite.

Many of Ex Ex Lovers’ scenes were shot with the charming skyline and historical architecture of Malta as a backdrop, where memories of the past are a running theme in both the film and the comeback itself. Plenty of Filipinos reside in the small European locale which made the actors feel at ease, and the moments that weren’t caught by the camera certified Marvin and Jolina’s chemistry and working relationship once again.

“'Yung in between talaga 'yung, para sa akin, ay importante sa isang trabaho,” Jolina said. “'Yun 'yung mga hindi pilit. 'Yun 'yung mga walang script. 'Yun 'yung totoong relationship ng lahat ng tao, pati lalo na ng artists.”

In Malta and in scenes filmed back home, Marvin and Jolina dusted off their know-how as an onscreen pair, which, to them, involved warming up and internalizing their characters Ced and Joy. “Doon pumapasok 'yung chemistry na meron kami. And 'yung pinakahugutan 'nun, 'yung pinaka-rason na gusto ko maging secret,” Jolina explained, saying that the mystique was part of their tandem’s running force. “Gusto ko lagi lang akong, ‘Ano kaya 'yun? Ano ba mayroon siya sa dimples na 'yan? Ano ba mayroon siya sa kakulitan nitong alam ko naman nang-bubola lang pero patol na patol ako?’”

In the end, their long-sustained kinship resulted in a film that compelled people enough to see it. “Making a film is something that we like doing, but making people go to the cinema is the hardest thing to do now,” Marvin remarked. “So, we wanted to make sure that it’s cinema-worthy 'yung experience. Compelling enough for people to go to the cinema, spend their time, and spend money for us.”

A Reel Romance

Marvin and Jolina are only one segment of the large tapestry known as the Filipino love team, a concept so particular to Philippine pop culture that it has mystified those outside the bubble. (“WTF is a love team? Sounds Mormon,” one international user asked in a LiveJournal Oh No They Didn't! comments section, as quoted in critic and professor Richard Bolisay’s essay.)

Many cultural historians recognize that love teams are almost as old as cinema in the country, with Mary Walter and Gregorio Fernandez noted as the country’s first love team, who starred in a string of silent movies from 1928’s Ang Lumang Simbahan to 1934’s Ang Lihim ni Bathala. The audience detects the curious concept known as chemistry in one instance, and the industry runs with it at full speed. In what some may note as a conceptual “arranged marriage” of actors, these stars find themselves paired in several projects. The audience yearns for each appearance, and in between the lines and the scripted dialogue are the real-life questions of “Are they, or are they not?” Often, they’re artfully avoided or eventually confirmed. Staunch supporters will hope for the latter, but in the case of Marvin and Jolina, their reunion film may not have come to fruition if they, well, “were.”

The two, whose animated energy bounces off each other, are no strangers to friendly ribbing even in tiring late-night shoot hours. “Magkaibigan talaga kami,” Marvin said. “And good thing nga, hindi kami naging mag-jowa. Kasi kung nangyari 'yun, baka todo na rin 'yung away namin.”

There have been many love teams before and after them that have transcended the lines of reel and real life. Some have stood the test of time and fame and continued a relationship, even a family, while some have eventually called it quits–which meant that their love team was, in effect, as good as gone. “Baka ngayon, ayaw na naming magtrabaho together,” Marvin considered the hypothetical. “So naging blessing in disguise.”

It isn’t to say that there wasn’t any external pressure to become real, however. For those outside the industry, it may not come as a surprise that there could be expectations from their management, or, at least, a barrage of persistent and invasive questions from the media or fans on whether or not they were together in reality. “At some point, medyo may manipulation, pero kami, matigas din ang ulo namin,” Marvin said, with Jolina adding: “Kasi alam nila 'yung gusto ng tao, 'di ba?

Siyempre, bawal umamin kung magiging kayo. Bawal i-kwento.

In recent years, actors and actresses who were formerly in love teams have been vocal about the limitations brought about by the system, especially for those who yearn for artistic growth and a personal life that wasn’t hinged on an on-screen relationship. As actors who’ve been recognized as part of a love team, Marvin and Jolina understood where they were coming from. But they acknowledged that first and foremost, show business was a business, and like any industry, it was hinged on demand.
“It’s for the fans. Kahit sabihin natin ang hirap gawin, but meron bang madaling trabaho? So this is work. This is business,” Marvin said. “It’s not for everyone. Hindi lahat tumatagal. Kung hindi ka ganun kagutom, hindi mo gagawin 'yung mga pinagagawa sa’yo.

For Marvin and Jolina, it was doubled with a stroke of luck that their pair worked on camera and that they had a good-natured relationship behind it for the most part. “Ang nangyari sa’min, para siyang... what you see is what you get,” Jolina explained. “Siguro wala kaming lumabas na sobrang away, because hindi na kami nag-dwell doon. 'Yung nakikita ng mga tao 'yung kinikilig kami, kasi ini-enjoy din talaga namin 'yun. Kaya minsan, kahit anong pressure, nasa artista din ’yun, kung papaano niya tatanggapin.
The Love Team Revolution
Much has been said about love teams in discussions amid the showbiz system and the machinations that have “puppeteered” its actors for almost a hundred years. At its core, the love team is a pop culture pillar that spoke to the hopelessly romantic nature of Filipinos, an audience that unabashedly valued romance as a genre, regardless if the genre has been looked down upon as an art form. To Marvin and Jolina, there was already merit in the joy love teams brought to audiences, which was a strong argument for their existence. From an actor’s side, it was also what sparked careers and boosted livelihoods.

Like them, many artistas in a love team setting are free to explore their own careers or their own passions, which, said Jolina, was vital to remind them of their own individualities. “Dapat lang talaga na magkaroon sila ng something na para sa sarili lang nila.

However, there was always room for the system to improve. One of which, according to Marvin, was to properly brief young actors about what they were about to embark on. “Wala akong babaguhin kung paano sila pinasikat. Pero ngayon, kahit bata pa, dapat ipaliwanag na sa kanila what they’re getting into,” he said. “Ang nangyayari, nari-realize na lang ng mga bata after six, seven, or eight years, at parang natututo na lang sila as they go. Nakikita mo 'yung mga love teams na nagbi-break. Parang feeling nila, nakulong sila, kasi hindi na-explain nang maayos.”

For Jolina, education and assessment have to begin at the start of their careers. “Tingnan nila muna kung pang love team ba 'yung bata o hindi,” she said. “Iba na rin 'yung [magiging] mentality niya about showbiz. Parang napilit siya sa isang bagay na hindi naman talaga 'yun 'yung gusto niya. Baka hindi niya na rin alam 'yung feelings niya, kung personal o professional. Dapat sobrang i-assess 'yung mga teenagers.”
More pairings have come after them, and there will be more as generations in the industry continue to be introduced. Love teams are evolving, as leeway has been made for actors who hoped to pursue beyond their on-screen partnerships. But it seems, from the view of the audience, the concept as a whole is not going away anytime soon–it just comes with a few changes, and hopefully, with more to come.

“Pero always be thankful and grateful kung ano 'yung naging journey mo towards where you at right now.”

I-enjoy niyo kasi marami kayong napapasayang tao. Marami kayong natutulungan,” he added. “Akala niyo, parang kilig-kilig lang 'yan. Hindi. Na-inspire niyo 'yung mga tao.”
This mirrored their own journey, in a way. The tapestry of Filipino love teams will continue to grow, but there, on one corner, is the bright, bright spot reserved for Marvin and Jolina, whose light has seeped into the next spaces, glowing their successors. If their love team is to be remembered for anything, it’s the almost tangible kilig that still radiates two decades on–fueled by a real-life connection that, thankfully, is just as legendary as the movies, or even more so.
