Have you seen what went down at the Vanity Fair Oscars after-party? Your favorite stars graced the red carpet in showstopping, party-ready looks that were put to good to use when they danced to groovy tunes at the special photo booth—even Parasite's award-winning director Bong Joon-ho went crazy for it.
But what also caught our attention amidst all the glamorous chaos was Joan Smalls. Yes, Joan Smalls. The statuesque model who never seems to age, and never fails to serve smoking hot looks. There's only one Joan Smalls. In a sea of colorful sequined dresses, Joan's mermaid-like outfit stood out the most. She sported a ruffled, two-toned blue gown with teeny tiny silver, seashell-like cups to cover her breasts. If you ask us, she definitely gave off Princess Ariel vibes.
The look is from Schiaparelli's Fall/Winter 2019 couture collection, a.k.a. Daniel Roseberry's debut collection as the brand's creative director.
Inspired by surrealism and animalia, the collection was all kinds of wild—and we're not just talking about the risqué cutouts. There were jackets covered in acrylic nails (a nod to Schiaparelli's iconic designs), exotic feathers, and yes, a lot of nature-inspired cups. Aside from Joan's look that makes her look like she's ready to belt out "Under the Sea," Roseberry also created a slinky brown tube dress with matching coconut cups—a fashown take on tropical-dressing.
The most colorful hubadera dress in the collection was a rainbow-hued ruffled dream that reminds us of Sebastian the crab, Princess Ariel's crustacean friend—well, if he ever wore bras. If Joan Smalls came with a girlfriend, this would have been the perfect oufit so they could nail a matchy-matchy look, as you would at a Halloween party.
Perhaps you've dreamt of being a mermaid at least once in your life, but would you dare to bare it all in seashell cups like Joan's? What are your thoughts on this Little Mermaid couture for the red carpet?
