If lovingly handmade, proudly Filipino patchwork pieces fit your style, then The Learning Lab should be on your radar. This non-government organization provides livelihoods for nanays by teaching them how to sew. Many start with little to no experience, but with proper guidance and access to materials, they learn to craft beautiful creations from excess trims and fabrics.

These items are reasonably priced, with at least half of the proceeds from each sale going directly to the woman who made it. With the holiday season fast approaching, they’re preparing for a busy period—one filled with opportunities to earn more for themselves and their families.

The problem is, they’re running out of materials to work with.

The Learning Lab Calls for Fabric Donations

The Filipino collective has saved a significant amount of fabric from ending up as environmental waste. “Those scraps became something beautiful: training, jobs, and real income for women who make magic with a sewing machine and a dream,” they shared in an Instagram post. “But here’s the plot twist—we’ve gotten so good at upcycling, we actually ran out of fabric.”

Beyond giving the nanays a joyful and productive holiday season, the group also hopes to sell more products to fund upcoming training sessions and the formation of new communities. This means more women—many in their 50s and beyond—can gain a second chance at working, learning, and earning through their own skills and creativity.

Those extra fabrics, threads, or trims you have lying around might just be the key to making it happen.
