Italian fashion house Gucci is bringing Disney’s beloved Mickey Mouse back as its guest of honor this Lunar New Year. January 25 marks the Year of the Rat and Alessandro Michele is once again showing off his love for the icon. This is the second time the creative director has paid homage to the Disney hero, the first being the 3D Mickey Mouse Top Handle Bag released on the Spring-Summer 2019 runway for the cartoon character’s 90th birthday in 2018.
This time around, Walt Disney’s True Original is featured on a dedicated collection, which includes shoes and bags, plus small leather goods, scarves, and clothing. Mickey Mouse is perfectly at home in the exaggerated fun of the luxury house as he makes a guest appearance in varying scale on Gucci prints, including the Mini GG Supreme canvas, a beige and ebony fabric that features the iconic Mini GG print inspired by a House fabric from the ‘80s.
The collection has the brand’s vintage spirit with the playful addition of the most famous mouse. Optimistic, energetic, and likable by all are some of the characteristics likened to people born on the Year of the Rat, and such characteristics truly capture the vibe of the collection.
And what luck—Jasmine Curtis-Smith and Bea Marin got first dibs on the collection during a recent trip to Tokyo. The two sauntered through the buzzing streets and atmospheric alleys of Shinjuku with Preview, wearing the pieces from Gucci’s Lunar New Year collection.

All the handbags and pieces of luggage have ochre leather trim, as do the small leather goods, which also come in the new Mini GG Supreme fabric featuring Mickey Mouse as a repeat pattern. Even the guitar case is prompting us to learn how to play the musical instrument.

Colorful prints on different materials from silk twill to cotton drill, elegant jacquard motifs on a silk-wool base, knit intarsias, and decorative embellishments, such as a hand-made crochet appliqué, give these clothes a powerful, distinctive character.
In women’s shoes, there is a new Gucci Tennis 1977 sneaker, a slip-on sneaker, a rubber-soled slide, and the Princetown slipper with lambswool lining, all in Mini GG Supreme fabric with Disney’s Mickey Mouse multiplied in miniature all over.
A selection of genuinely striking accessories is ripe for the picking. Gucci’s famous Flora pattern gets the Disney treatment for a silk carré, as do two new prints—one, an ochre-toned pattern that features an autumnal setting of mushrooms, and another that has a more summery theme, in blue hues, with hares, wild birds and flowers.
