7 Style Lessons We Can Learn From These Filipinas at NYFW

7 Style Lessons We Can Learn From These Filipinas at NYFW See how they nailed each outfit!

We don't need to convince you that Filipinas are naturally fashionable. They have a knack for dressing up and turning heads wherever they are. Recent case in point: Heart Evangelista clad in her bright pink Delpozo coat at Paris Haute Couture Week, a look that's been featured several times by international fashion sites.

As New York Fashion Week kicks off its Fall 2018 shows, we've got more Filipinas proving just how well they rule the street style game with their double tap-worthy outfits. Learn sartorial lessons from the chicest NYFW-goers, including Liz and Laureen Uy, Nicole Andersson, and Kim Jones!

Lesson #1: Don't be afraid to break the monotony.

While monochrome dressing is fail-proof, it has a tendency to look quite plain. And what better way to break the monotony than to add an exciting pop of color, right? Take note of how Kim Jones wore Pantone's 2018 color of the year, Ultraviolet, via her Balenciaga boots for a more fashion-forward look.

Lesson #2: When in doubt, combine texture with print.

Kim demonstrates the right way to do a play on texture and print. Her faux fur coat teamed with a micro pleated Dion Lee skirt is already interesting on its own, but finished off with a pair of plaid boots? Immaculate.

Lesson #3: Toughen up a dainty look with an edgy piece.

If you're feeling extra adventurous, here's Nicole Andersson schooling us on how to wear three trends all at once. She gave the sheer tulle trend a makeover by injecting two other interesting twists: plaid and bulky shoes. Here's a secret: it's totally okay to give a feminine look an edgy spin.

Lesson #4: It's all about the silhouette.

Experimenting with cuts and silhouettes is a must. Here's Nicole again to prove our point: her all-black turtleneck and leggings combo provided the perfect canvas for layering. She wore high slit, wide-leg trousers over her leggings paired with a cropped Samantha Richelle jacket (swipe to the last photo for a closer look!) and it instantly granted her legs for days!

Lesson #5: Double the denim, double the fun!

Denim is a beloved fabric all fashion girls need in their lives. The coolest way to wear it now? Denim on denim, of course—it's a tried-and-tested style combo. Take a look at Liz and Laureen's different takes on the trend; while Laureen went for two denim washes, Liz opted for something darker and more structured.

Both ladies also took denim dressing up a notch by adding interesting details: Laureen with her bright red furry jacket and oversized yellow scarf, and Liz with her on-trend plastic boots.

Lesson #6: White is the new black.

Just like your go-to pair of black boots, its stark white contrast is on its way to being a closet staple. As demonstrated by Liz, a white pair tones down metallic pieces and makes them suitable for a day look. But if you prefer to take a style note from Laureen, see how she wore hers to give her overalls and beanie a more polished vibe. Either way, we're sure your outfit will look modern and fresh.

Lesson #7: Marry pink and red.

If you need a little more push to try out this color combo, here's Laureen proving just how awesome these bright colors look together. You don't have to commit to a full-on pink and red look, though. Tip: Use one color as your focal piece and accessorize using the other hue!
