Here's How to Style the Trendy Checkerboard Print, As Seen on Local Influencers

Social media has played a part in closing the gap between what's outdated and what's current in terms of fashion. Thanks to the countless references we've been looped in on, contemporary style has never been this multi-hyphenated: What's "in" is a busy, borderless melange of mod, Y2K, '90s silhouettes, the prints and colors of the '70s, a timeless devotion to neutrals and casual dressing, plus so much more. That said, don't be surprised if trends seem to echo other trends you swear you've seen before. Like, say, that checkerboard print that tastemakers are wearing on Instagram? Yup, it's the same one you sported in high school in the form of slip-on Vans. 

So yes, it's not a new print. It appeared in tiling and flags as early as the 1600s, and crept into fashion in the '50s and '60s. Before Anya Taylor-Joy convinced everyone to try it via her stellar Queen's Gambit wardrobe, Australian designer Emma Mulholland, through her brand Holiday, introduced the checkered Kokomo Pant in 2017, which was one of the earlier iterations of the candied, pastel checkered garments that influencers often wear today. Now, buzzy retailers like Shein and Pomelo have picked up the print, giving local wearers direct access to the trend.

1. Chi Gibbs famously has a way with color. Here, she paired garnet block heel thong sandals with a blue and red bodycon dress. She finished off the look with chic pear-hued sunnies.

3. Aside from the checkerboard print, it looks like peephole garments are flourishing, too! Jamina Cruz wore her bodycon dress with thick-rimmed rectangular sunglasses and matching chunky rings. 

4. Pile on the prints, says Ciara Gan. She's keeping with a red, blue, and white motif for this one. This proves the importance of a colorful shoe in tying the outfit togther.

5. Didn't think checkerboards could get any funkier? Well, they come also come in a swirly, warped pattern, too, like the print on Chelsea Valencia's bodycon dress. She styled it with a pearl necklace and amber-tinted beige sunglasses. 

6. Again, the warped print but in pant form. Toni Sia's totally on-trend: She has on a cropped baby tee, slightly boot cut optical illusion pants, pillowy platform slippers, and a cute mini bag. 

7. Rhea Bue rocked a monochromatic 'fit made up of a cold shoulder halter top, off-white ripped jeans, a furry handbag, and her signature sneakers. 

8. Patricia Prieto's checkerboard number is an adorable crocheted halter top, which she paired with hazel green aviators and army green cargo pants. Your fashion takeaway: subvert a military-inspired outfit with a pretty trend of your choosing.

9. Jeline Catt's matching with Rhea! But this time, she styled the top with narrow rectangular sunglasses, boxy ivory shorts, and white Birkenstocks. 

10. In a styling vid, she sported checkerboard jeans with a sexy black cardigan with pearl locks, and gold-accented black sunnies with matching earrings.
