Only a few nautical miles to the north, Taiwan has long been a popular vacation destination for many Filipinos.

For years, Filipinos have enjoyed visa-free entry to the country, provided their stay does not exceed 14 days. The policy falls under Taiwan's New Southbound Policy, an initiative aimed at strengthening the country's socioeconomic ties with 18 partner nations, including the Philippines.

Why Taiwan Annually Extends Visa-Free Entry to Filipinos

In case you missed it, the Taiwan Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) has officially announced that visa-free entry to Taiwan has been extended until July 31, 2027, for all Philippine passport holders. In a statement, the office said:

“In reciprocity for the visa-free privileges the Philippines has extended to Taiwan nationals, Taiwan has also extended its visa-free entry for Philippine passport holders for another year.”

Taiwan's annual extension of visa-free entry for Filipinos has become something of a tradition. The initiative was first introduced in 2017 under the New Southbound Policy launched by then-President Tsai Ing-wen.

In simple terms, the policy seeks to strengthen Taiwan's economic, cultural, educational, and people-to-people ties with 18 partner countries. It has since been continued and expanded under current President Lai Ching-te as Taiwan works to diversify its international partnerships and reduce its economic dependence on China. Tourism plays a key role in this strategy, making visa-free entry an important measure to encourage travel and deepen exchanges with neighboring countries.

In June 2025, the Philippines' Department of Foreign Affairs also announced that Taiwanese passport holders would continue to enjoy visa-free entry to the country for stays of up to 14 days, reflecting the two governments' reciprocal travel arrangements.

The Philippines is among several countries covered by Taiwan's visa-free program, alongside Thailand and Brunei. According to the Taiwan Tourism Administration, more than 210,000 Filipinos visited Taiwan during the first quarter of 2026—a 43% increase from the same period last year—making the Philippines Taiwan's largest source of visitors from Southeast Asia.

As post-pandemic travel continues to rebound, the Philippines and Taiwan are also navigating an increasingly complex regional landscape. Amid these broader developments, the continued extension of reciprocal visa-free entry reflects both sides' commitment to strengthening exchanges through tourism. For travelers, that means one less hurdle to visiting one of the Philippines' closest neighbors in the Pacific.
