Did You Know? Filipinos Can Visit This Island Province in China Visa-Free
This coastal corner of China comes without the usual paperwork.

China isn’t typically associated with visa-free spontaneity for Philippine passport holders. In most cases, a trip there requires advance paperwork and an embassy visit. But there’s one exception that changes the equation—especially if you’re craving a beach destination with a different cultural backdrop.
Hainan Province, China’s only tropical island province, allows Filipinos to enter without a visa, making it one of the easiest ways to see the country.
Hainan, China Is Visa-Free for Filipinos
According to the Chinese Embassy in the Philippines, ordinary Philippine passport holders may enter Hainan Province visa-free for up to 30 days.
As announced by Chinese authorities in February 2024, the expanded policy covers travelers from 59 countries, including the Philippines. Eligible visitors may enter Hainan for tourism, business and trade, visits, family visits, medical treatment, exhibitions, and sports competitions.

The 30-day stay is counted from 12 a.m. on the day after arrival. Travelers may enter through all ports open to foreign nationals—including Haikou Meilan International Airport and Sanya Fenghuang International Airport—without the need to declare in advance, provided they hold a valid ordinary passport and are cleared by border inspection authorities.
There’s one important condition: to qualify for visa-free entry, travelers must arrive via a direct international flight from their country or transit through a third country or through Hong Kong or Macao. Outside of Hainan, Philippine passport holders are still required to secure a visa to enter mainland China.

Located at the southernmost tip of China, Hainan is known for its beach cities, tropical climate, and large-scale resort developments, particularly in Sanya. It’s also home to Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park, one of China’s first five national parks. Beyond its coastline, the province hosts major international events such as the Boao Forum for Asia and the Hainan Island International Film Festival.
How to Get to Hainan Province from Manila
There are currently no direct flights from Manila to Hainan’s capital, Haikou, or the alternative port of Sanya. Travelers typically connect via Hong Kong or another third country before continuing onward to Hainan.
Airlines such as Cathay Pacific operate routes from Manila to Hong Kong, where passengers can transfer to flights bound for Hainan. Travelers may also fly to Hong Kong through Philippine Airlines or Cebu Pacific before booking a separate connecting flight to either Haikou or Sanya. Round-trip fares for the full journey can start at around P13,000, depending on travel dates and how early tickets are secured.
Hong Kong remains visa-free for Filipinos, making it a straightforward and familiar transit point. As always, it’s best to confirm airline routes and current entry requirements before booking, especially since policies and schedules can change.
