Sophie Kinsella, the beloved British novelist behind Confessions of a Shopaholic, has died at 55. Her family shared the news in a statement on social media, saying she passed peacefully, surrounded by the things she loved most. The author revealed in 2024 that she had been diagnosed with glioblastoma two years earlier. Her death prompted an outpouring of tributes from fellow authors, readers, and friends who remembered her warmth, wit, and singular gift for storytelling.

To honor her life and legacy, here are five things to know about the woman behind one of contemporary fiction’s most recognizable voices.

1. Sophie Kinsella was the pen name of Madeleine Sophie Wickham.

Born in London in 1969, Sophie originally published under her real name, Madeleine Wickham. She adopted the pen name Sophie Kinsella—drawing from her middle name and her mother’s maiden name—for what she thought would be a one-off experiment, according to The New York Times. That “experiment” became a defining shift in her career, eventually turning her into an international bestselling author whose books sold tens of millions of copies.

2. She created one of modern fiction’s most iconic heroines.

The author became a global sensation with The Secret Dreamworld of a Shopaholic (released internationally as Confessions of a Shopaholic), which introduced the world to Becky Bloomwood. The story, inspired in part by a startling credit-card bill, struck a chord with readers and grew into a beloved 10-book series. The first two novels were later adapted into the 2009 film starring Isla Fisher, who said she was “absolutely heartbroken” after Sophie’s passing and thanked her for her “light and magic,” according to BBC.

3. Her writing shaped and elevated romantic comedy literature.

Often grouped under “chick lit,” Sophie helped redefine the genre through warm, sharply plotted stories filled with humor and emotional depth. Her peers described her mastery with admiration: Jojo Moyes told BBC News she had “never met anybody who carried more grace,” while fellow author Adele Parks called her a “wonderful, warm woman” who brought “so much joy to the world.” Her publisher added that she possessed a “unique voice” and an “unquenchable spirit” that will continue to inspire readers.

4. She wrote more than 30 books across genres.

While she was best known for her Shopaholic series, Sophie also released standalone novels, children’s books, and a young adult novel. Her works include Can You Keep a Secret?, The Undomestic Goddess, and Finding Audrey. Her final book, What Does It Feel Like?, published in 2024, offered a semi-fictional reflection on her cancer diagnosis and the way she processed life through storytelling, as reported by The New York Times.

5. She was remembered as warm, funny, and deeply loved.

Tributes highlighted not just her talent but her spirit. Actress Isla Fisher said the author would “live on in [her] incredible characters,” while writer Jenny Colgan described her as “really funny, really warm,” according to BBC. Her family said she faced her illness “with unimaginable courage” and remained grateful for the love she received throughout her life. She is survived by her husband, Henry Wickham, and their five children.
