Among the fuss and frenzy of the 30th Southeast Asian Games’ opening last night were the beauty queens in attendance. Held at the Philippine Arena in Bulacan, the parade of athletes featured several Philippine international pageant title holders as a muses for each participating country. They were led by Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach, who marched in front of the Philippine team; and Miss World 2013 Megan Young, who walked as the Indonesian team’s muse.
An honor for the country, both Pia and Megan took to Instagram to express their pride over being able to represent the Philippines in the prestigious international event. “So happy and blessed to represent our beloved country at the opening of the 30th Southeast Asian Games. Goodluck to all the hardworking athletes. Mabuhay po kayo at mabuhay ang bansang Pilipinas,” Pia’s caption read.
Behind Pia were over 1000 of the Philippines’ delegates clad in special barongs made of jusi created by internationally acclaimed local designer Francis Libiran.
Megan, on the other hand, whose terno resembled the colors of the Philippine flag, revealed her gratitude for having been able to walk with the athletes of Indonesia, where she won the Miss World crown six years ago. “What an amazing experience it was to be a part of the opening number! Each of us walked with a participating country earlier and I’m so happy I got to walk with the Indonesian athletes. Indonesia will always be a country dear to my heart because that’s where I won Miss World,” Megan wrote on her post. “Took some photos backstage with Queen P, who walked with the Philippine athletes during the opening number! Nakakakilabot nung sinabi yung 'PHILIPPINES'!!! During that moment we were all just so proud to be Filipino.”
All of the participating beauty queens wore custom ternos designed by Eric Pineda.
Other muses included Miss International 2005 Lara Quigaman for Malaysia, Miss Eco International 2018 Cynthia Thomalla for Laos, Miss Intercontinental 2018 Karen Gallman for Brunei, Miss Earth 2017 Karen Ibasco for Myanmar, Miss Earth 2015 Angelia Ong for Thailand, Miss Multinational 2017 Sophia Seronon for Cambodia, Miss Earth 2014 Jamie Herrell for Singapore, Miss Asia Pacific International 2018 Sharifa Akeel for Vietnam, and Miss Tourism International 2017 Jannie Alipoon for Timor Leste.
The 2019 SEA Games is set to run until December 11, 2019.
