In case you haven't been to the North lately, there's a work of art situated there that may make you want to visit. In the busy mall of SM North, a bright mural featuring Gloria Diaz, Margie Moran, Pia Wurtzbach, and Catriona Gray standing tall with their winning looks, can be viewed. These four women make up the elite club of the only Filipinas to ever successfully take home the Miss Universe crown.
A collaboration among ZIG Philippines, Davies Paints, and SM City North Edsa, twelve artists were given the opportunity to create a mural with the theme pop culture. The project was anything under the sun and Pete Rich, the artist behind the Miss Universe mural, went for his signature fashion illustration style. He shares that he picked the four queens to be his subjects because they are important figures that are forever immortalized for the Filipino people. "I decided to go with the four Ms. Universe of the Philippines because I wanted to inject a Filipino vibe into my work, and those four will forever be part of Philippine pop culture since beauty pageantry has always been the 'Super Bowl of the Philippines.'"
Since it was a large scale work, the process was no easy feat too. But the artist was very thankful for the challenge. "It took me four nights to finish this mural. I usually worked at night after mall hours because I found it more quiet and less stressful." This is very important for me because this was my first mural and it was a personal challenge. I haven’t done something of this scale before, and I was so happy I was given this opportunity to challenge myself."
Here's the original study for the artwork:
It has attracted quite a lot of attention from people both in person and online. Even Pia herself couldn't help but gush over it. She commented on Pete's IG post saying, "Whaaaat!! So crazy!!" and followed it up with "Love it!!" in another comment.
If you want to see the larger than life art in person, it’s located at SM City North Edsa, North Towers Artwalk.
