Maricel Soriano is off to Hollywood! Philippine show biz's Diamond Star will be starring in an American rom-com film titled Re-Live: A Tale of an American Island Cheerleader, which will be headlined by other Filipino actors.
Re-Live revolves around Rowena, a transgender Hollywood actress who returns to her hometown in Guam to participate in her high school reunion's "do-over week". She takes it as an opportunity to live her childhood dream of being a cheerleader, but her mother's deteriorating health due to cancer soon challenges her commitment to the task.
Rowena will be played by Filipino-American Primetime Emmy-nominated actress Rain Valdez, who wrote the script together with fellow Fil-Am and award-winning director Rachel Leyco. Rachel will star as Rain's sister in the film, while Maricel will play the duo's ailing mom.
"Having a legendary Filipino actress like Maricel Soriano strengthens our commitment to telling our stories from our authentic experiences and for our Filipinx diaspora," Rain and Rachel said in a joint statement.
"Now more than ever, this empowers us to further highlight our communities at a time when visibility must be taken to new heights to fight against the rise of anti-trans and anti-Asian violence."
Rain also took to Instagram to express her excitement over casting the Diamond Star for her feature directorial debut. "She was always our first choice and my mom and I would watch all her movies growing up. I remember saying to my team very early on, 'We need somebody like… Maricel Soriano.' And a year later, here we are! I am completely besides myself with excitement and happy tears," she wrote.
Variety reports that Re-Live will begin filming in both Hawaii and Guam this November. Aside from having Filipino lead stars, the movie is also executive produced by Filipino Tony and Grammy Award winner Jhett Tolentino.
