With countless family reunions growing up, the passing comment about weight gain–or loss–almost feels like a staple. However, what isn’t usually visible is the effect it has on people in the long run. Take Iza Calzado, for example, who shared her experience in an empowering post.
Recently published across her social media channels, the actress posted a heartful message about being the subject of name-calling during her younger years.
“Meet Big. She was teased a lot by her family and friends. A lot of them were well meaning and even came from a place of love and concern but the truth with name calling or labels is that it sticks and you may carry it with you or believe in it,” she wrote, accompanying her post with an old photo of herself, alongside a more recent one.
“It takes a whole level of confidence, courage, and strength to break free from these names thrown your way. [...] I hope we can stop normalizing in our culture where young girls have to live under the shadows of the names people call them,” the actress said.
To cap off the post, Iza addressed young people potentially sharing similar struggles, stressing that size should never determine worth.
“From being big to dreaming big, here now is Iza. No longer making size a source of pain but rather a source of power. Shine bright, ladies. You are enough.” You go, Iza!
Iza has long been vocal about her weight loss journey in the past, but the recent empowering post was uploaded in support of Dove’s #StopTheNameCalling campaign.
