Spoilers beware! It’s not often that an actor plays two drastically different roles—one a morally conflicted schemer, the other a selfless game contestant—and ends both storylines with a fatal twist. But for Park Sung Hoon, the deaths of his characters in both Netflix-streaming Queen of Tears and Squid Game Season 3 didn’t just share a dramatic flair, they happened to be filmed on the same day.

Park Sung Hoon on Filming "Squid Game" and "Queen of Tears" Death Scenes on the Same Day
In a behind-the-scenes video released by Netflix, the actor joined his Squid Game castmates to react to the show’s intense hide-and-seek scene. There, Park Sung Hoon revealed the emotional and physical toll of his dual demise on that particular filming day—including that of his Squid Game character, Hyun-ju, and his Queen of Tears character, Yoon Eun-sung.

“We shot that scene at the studio in Daejeon, and then I went straight to Jeongseon, Gangwon Province, to shoot Queen of Tears, which is also on Netflix,” he said. “And it just so happened we shot Yoon Eun-sung’s death scene on the very same day.”

While reliving the Squid Game moment, Sung Hoon recalled, “The director told me to shed a single teardrop right after the second stab before I fell to the ground. And I got it in the first take.”
Kang Ae Sim, who played Geum-ja (Player 149), empathized deeply with Sung Hoon while watching the scene unfold. “It must have been difficult for you,” she said, visibly moved.

“I had to do that in both projects, and it was emotionally draining to do those scenes back to back,” Sung Hoon admitted.

Even Im Si Wan, who plays Hyun-ju's killer Myung-gi (Player 333), couldn’t help but comment and discuss his character's motivation for the murder. “After watching the scene, I think he was trying to kill as many people as possible so he could make more money and leave with Jun-hee. That was his purpose,” he said. “He fell for the temptation and was blinded by his goal of killing as many people as possible. I think he saw Hyun-ju merely as money. So he killed her, not knowing who it was.”

In Season 2 and 3 of Squid Game, Park Sung Hoon plays Hyun-ju, a contestant who meets her end in the high-stakes keys and knives game. The premise is simple but deadly: navigate a maze, retrieve a key, and survive other players on a killing spree.
While trying to escape, Hyun-ju discovers the exit but chooses not to leave alone. Instead, she returns to help Jun-hee (Player 222, Jo Yu Ri), who is in labor, and Geum-ja (Ae Sim), who is assisting with the birth. Hyun-ju needs their keys to open the final door.

Before she can reach them, she’s ambushed and fatally stabbed in the back by Myung-gi (Si Wan)—Jun-hee’s partner and the father of her baby—who is blinded by greed. It’s a brutal turn for one of the few righteous players in the game.

Yoon Eun-sung's Death in "Queen of Tears"
Meanwhile, the emotional climax of Queen of Tears sees Sung Hoon’s Yoon Eun-sung spiraling into desperation. In the finale, Eun-sung kidnaps Hae-in (Kim Ji Won) and takes her to a secluded family hunting lodge, where he confronts her about her rekindled feelings for Hyun-woo (Kim Soo Hyun).

Hae-in, now fully recovered from amnesia, tries to defuse the situation by pretending to sympathize with him. Meanwhile, Hyun-woo, still injured from a prior car accident, races to the lodge to rescue her.
As the tension mounts, a final confrontation ensues, and Eun-sung, consumed by jealousy, pulls a gun on the couple. He proclaims, “I will take Hae-in, even if it means death,” before shooting Hyun-woo.

Police arrive just in time, and in the ensuing standoff, Eun-sung is fatally shot. The drama ends with Hyun-woo in surgery, asking Hae-in to stay by his side.
