A wise netizen once said, “If Anne hath a will, Anne Hathaway.” And turns out, the internet was right—because she eventually landed the role of Andy Sachs in The Devil Wears Prada.
The world first met Andy on the silver screen in 2006 through the adaptation of Lauren Weisberger’s 2003 novel of the same name. It has attained iconic status, and this has driven the production of a sequel that fans have waited 20 years for.

Back in 2016, Anne spoke about not being the first choice to play the role. “I had to be patient,” she said in a past interview, recalling how thrilled she was when the part was finally confirmed to be hers. She shared more details in 2021, revealing she was actually the ninth choice to play Andy.
Rachel McAdams, who had already starred in The Notebook and Mean Girls, was the top choice but declined multiple times. Recently, another piece of the puzzle was found when another Hollywood star revealed she was also offered the role.
Kate Hudson Was Asked to Play Andy Sachs in “The Devil Wears Prada”
In a recent interview with Drew Barrymore, Kate Hudson opened up about having to turn down the role—not because she wanted to, but because she had to. “It was one of those things,” she said. “There was, like, scheduling stuff. It was in conversation, and there [were] all these things happening, and I decided not to.”
Back when she was offered the role, she had already played Andie Anderson in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, another fictional icon in the publishing world.

The actress admitted that it’s a kind of situation that will sometimes make one think, “I wished that worked out.” After all, she said, “Who doesn’t want to work with Meryl Streep?”
Regardless, Kate emphasized that “It happened exactly the way it was supposed to.” She said it’s just an inevitable part of working in the movie industry, and Drew agreed, adding that “it’s not about competition.” Rather, these circumstances serve more as “sliding doors.”
Three years after the first film was released, Kate and Anne (who she endearingly calls Annie) co-starred in the romantic comedy Bride Wars. In her recent interview, she sincerely expressed, “Annie shines like the bright star she is. She’s amazing.”

Kate’s latest project is the series Running Point, which also stars Justin Theroux, who plays Benji Barnes in The Devil Wears Prada 2.
