The 4th of November 2025 marks a special day for the Beckham family, with David Beckham having been knighted by King Charles III in Windsor, England. The Royal Family’s official Instagram shared a video of the investiture ceremony, detailing that the honor comes as a recognition for his “services to sport and to charity.”

The retired football icon, who can now be referred to as Sir, penned an emotional caption to express his gratitude for the momentous occasion. “I am truly humbled and so grateful for this honour. I have been fortunate to represent our country, and I've always done that with pride,” he wrote. Sir David thanked his family, each of the teams he had represented, and the organizations he continues to work with.

By his side was his partner of 28 years, Lady Victoria Beckham, who had an unforgettable day not only as Sir David’s wife, but also as a fashion designer. History was made as her atelier created its “first ever tailored menswear piece,” just for David. For the bespoke three-piece morning suit, inspiration was derived from “the timeless sophistication of British royal style.”

This is not the first time the pair has been recognized by the Royal Family. In 2003, Sir David was appointed an officer of the Order of the British Empire, bestowed by the late Queen Elizabeth, for his services to his beloved sport. Lady Victoria was also granted this by Prince William in 2017 for her significant contributions to the fashion industry.

What It Means to Be Knighted by the Royal Family

One of the highest honors in the United Kingdom is to be made a Knight or a Dame, which “ is usually granted to those who have made a significant contribution to their field, usually on a national level,” according to the Royal Family’s official website. It cannot be bought, and it does not entail military obligations. “Such knighthoods are conferred by The King, on the advice of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, on those who have made an important contribution to relations between their country and Britain.”

The investiture can be either public or private, led by the King or a member of the Royal Family acting on his behalf. These were awarded merely for military merit in the past centuries, but today, recipients range from a wide variety of industries. Some of the notable personalities with knighthood and damehood include Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton, musician Paul McCartney, supermodel Twiggy Lawson, and actress Julie Andrews.
