Living in a fast-paced world, it’s natural to feel the need to detach from the daily grind. For some, that means attending parties, enjoying a night of drinking and dancing, and connecting with others—a way to open up to the world and forget about stress, even if only for a short while. From blasting your playlist and going full glam to meeting up with friends and making new memories, the whole experience can be a much-needed source of excitement.

Hand in hand with this is the equally true reality that an eventful night often ends in exhaustion. It’s a common experience after a captivating evening—feeling that overwhelming urge to take off your shoes, lie down, and head straight to bed. But a night of fun is no excuse to abandon years of self-love-fueled skincare commitment, is it?

Preview spoke with board-certified dermatologist Dr. Francesca Sy-Alvarado, also known as Dr. Chesca, to create a simplified skincare routine for partygoers (or anyone who ends their nights late).

Dr. Chesca emphasized, “Lack of sleep and intake of alcohol could lead to dehydrated skin.” For nights like these, this four-step routine will suffice.
Step 1
Start with a makeup remover.

Make sure you end the night with a clean face, free from the external grime caused by smoke, pollution, and the like. Your makeup remover should be able to break down all residue—especially from the glam you applied earlier.

Step 2
Use a facial cleanser.
Go with your trusted daily cleanser to ensure you’ve washed off all the dirt and to restore that overall refreshing feeling.

Step 3
Apply a serum infused with hydrators and antioxidants.
Hyaluronic acid effectively targets dehydrated skin, restoring much-needed moisture. Additionally, “Antioxidants are your best friend!” Dr. Chesca shared, noting that vitamins C and E, in particular, have “the most consistent evidence in terms of countering the effects of free radicals on the skin.” Applying a serum equipped with these can provide the nourishment your skin needs after a long night.
Step 4
Seal it in with a rich moisturizer.
Lock it all in with a moisturizer that contains emollients or other ingredients known for keeping skin soft and supple. If your skin needs extra TLC, opt for a moisturizer with occlusives as well, which help protect and strengthen the skin barrier. Shea butter, jojoba oil, ceramides, and squalane are some of the key ingredients to look for.

Dr. Chesca noted that on days when you have a little less bandwidth, you can scale the routine down to three steps. Instead of using a serum separate from the moisturizer, go for a multitasking formula that contains both antioxidants and hyaluronic acid.
