Your makeup will still last all day!

Powder is everyone's best friend for avoiding makeup meltdowns. One pat and swipe and your skin is shine-free and ready for a long day ahead. That is, of course, if you apply it correctly. Put on a little too much and you'll be saying hello to a dry, chalky complexion. Not up for that look? Read our guide below for our best tricks to avoid it!

1. Blot your skin beforehand.

To avoid that chalky look, split a two-ply tissue in half and gently dab away leftover moisturizer or oil on your skin before you powder. This will make your face less sticky and shiny, and you'll notice right away how little you actually need to set your makeup.

2. Only powder areas that need it the most.

Even if you're oily, you don't need to powder all over. A fully-matte face looks incredibly flat and one-dimensional, giving it a less than natural effect. Avoid this by identifying the areas where you're the oiliest (like the T-zone) and focusing most of the product there. The areas you use concealer on like your undereyes and blemishes should also be part of your priority list!

3. Use a finely-milled powder that looks like skin.

How you powder isn't the only thing you should look out for. You have to pick the right one for the job, and it should be anything but chalky. Go for products that set your makeup without drying your skin or ones that glide over your face without accentuating dry patches.

4. Finish up with a face mist.

In case of already overpowdered skin, don't panic. A few spritzes of a hydating face mist will tone down the look of powder and bring back a natural sheen that doesn't look oily.

5. Switch powder for a setting spray.

Setting sprays are basically your face powder in mist form. It locks in your makeup in a flash sans the too-matte finish! If you have dry skin, opt for these instead of powder to avoid highlighting dry spots.
