For a psychological thriller, Fight Club certainly made an unexpected impact in the hair industry. Chuck Palahniuk’s 1996 novel was adapted into a film by David Fincher in 1999, wherein Brad Pitt became the face of the character Tyler Durden.

The charismatic and masculine character donned rugged looks, and as a result of insomnia and physical brawls, often showed up with messy hair—something we now know as the warrior cut.

What Is a Warrior Cut?

The warrior cut is a sharp and heavily textured hairstyle that emulates a “just got out of bed” look. It’s characterized by medium lengths on top, with choppy, uneven layers from point-cutting. This helps give it more movement and volume, preserving its effortless nature.

By the book, it’s paired with close-cropped or faded sides that blend smoothly to the top. With flowing locks and face-framing edges, it has a charm that’s equally laid-back and edgy.

The versatile look works well for most faces, but the tousled hairdo defines the features of square, rectangle, and diamond face shapes especially well. Those with rounder or less angular face shapes can undoubtedly sport the look, too, by opting for a length that can help maintain visual balance.

Since the warrior cut utilizes a lot of volume, those with thinner hair strands might find it a bit more challenging to style. For medium-to-thick, straight or wavy hair, however, it would be a breeze to style and maintain the lived-in hairdo.

How to Ask Your Barber for a Warrior Cut

Want to know the specifics? According to Gatsby, it’s best to head to the barbershop once your hair has grown three to four inches long at the top, which should be enough to achieve the spikey look.

“Tell your barber you want point-cut textured layers on top and a low fade using soft scissors for a natural, blended finish—all with that intentionally messy vibe.” For the style that most resembles Brad Pitt’s in Fight Club, request that the sides be “short and choppy, but not overly refined.” This specific cut helps emphasize texture all around.

There are also other ways to customize the look. The charming hairstyle also works with a taper, a burst or classic fade, and even a mullet!
