Like clockwork, Tim Yap’s crew stormed into Valkyrie at 5 a.m. on Saturday, just as the last club goers from the night before had left the building. By 11, they were putting the final touches to his “intimate lunch for 50,” as per his SMS invitation to his birthday bash. “Come in the color of the year,” came the king’s orders.

As Style Bible arrived to catch the first few guests’ fashionable arrivals, we discovered that 50 had ballooned to 75. A full orchestra, the Manila cast of Into the Woods, and Ms. Lea Salonga were rehearsing their song numbers. (Ms. Salonga, the theme to Wicked.) And in the middle of it all was a humongous coronet made of roses, with spokes fashioned out of yellow mums.

“The theme is royalty,” said event stylist Barbie Pardo. “Crests and crowns.”

The best-in-theme was Tim, himself, of course, who wore a princely blazer by Dolce & Gabbana. “But I’m changing to Rajo later,” he said, referring to his dance party that evening as part two of his celebration.

Perhaps the only failure was that the guests wore red, not exactly the color of the year, marsala. And even then, they found it a wee bit difficult to find day-appropriate crimsons.

“I only own one red blazer,” said Rajo Laurel, beside us.
