Preview Girls' Choice Awards 2018: Best in Makeup and Fragrance

Real reviews from real Preview girls.

by Nikki Santiago-Rivera and Nicole Arcano | Oct 30, 2018

On its second year, the Preview Girls' Choice Awards makes its digital debut on Preview.ph with 50 women reviewing this year's best in beauty.

In 2016, we gave our long-standing tradition of Preview Beauty Awards a major makeover. Rather than sounding off on our beauty picks ourselves, we passed on the mic to real Preview girls and had them share their thoughts on the products we know and love. Hence, the Preview Girls' Choice Awards was born. Now, for its digital debut on Preview.ph, we nominated a fresh pool of women for another round of product raving and critiquing. Keep scrolling for this year's #ImAPreviewGirl-approved makeup and fragrances for 2018!

MAKEUP

Best Liquid Foundation: La Prairie Skin Caviar Essence in Foundation, P14,000, Rustan's

"A no-fuss, no-mess foundation for women who are looking for a product that does double duty in covering imperfections on the outside while improving skin texture and elasticity from the inside. The Essence-In-Foundation is very on-point for La Prairie, with everything from the packaging, to the formula, to the finish, is a testament to the brand's legacy of luxury skincare. While the hefty price tag obviously doesn't make this the right choice for everyone, the potency of the ingredients of the Essence-In-Foundation is an ideal product for those looking to invest in a star product to center other products around in their top shelf." - Reggie Aquino-Diano

Best Powder Foundation: MAC Lightful C Coral Grass Foundation, P2350, SM Megamall

"This foundation was a fun surprise, because it matched my skin tone, when usually I would have to blend a couple of colors to find my match. I didn't feel like I had to adjust with the feel either, and it was like I wasn't wearing makeup—the texture and consistency was pretty light and my pores could breathe. Another awesome plus was I didn't have to constantly check if my face was oily or if I had to powder my nose! I didn't even have to take it with me for a night out because my skin wasn't oily the whole time, which is pretty convenient!" — Nikki Veron Cruz-Castillo

Best Liquid Concealer: Laura Mercier Flawless Fusion Ultra-Longwear Concealer, P1550, Rustan's

"The product is a good overall concealer that I would recommend for any skin type. It works well on dry and textured skin, as well as for those that are more oily especially on the T-zone. Its high-medium to full coverage lasts a good amount of time yet provides a really natural finish and a lightweight feel. Its easy-to-blend consistency and great packaging make application really easy even for beginners!" - Anna Cristobal

Best Cream Concealer: NARS Soft Matte Complete Concealer, P1650, Rustan's

"It was surprisingly very easy to apply compared to the liquid concealers I'm used to. I didn't need to use so much for it to do its job. It was very smooth, and blending it was so effortless. One thing I like is that it provides very good coverage without cracking or looking too thick. It also lasts the whole day—one time I fell asleep with makeup on and the next day it was still there, doing its job. Unfortunately, my dark circles are past the point of no return, and no matter how much makeup I put and no matter who does it, they can still be seen. Still, this concealer was able to reduce their appearance more than my previous concealers did, while still managing to look natural and smooth." - Regina Badiee

Best Pressed Powder: Claudia Schiffer No Colour Setting Powder, P1995, Beauty Bar

"This is a light, fragrance-free, and colorless setting powder that does the job of making your makeup last longer and look seamless. It comes in a pretty pink and gold compact that makes it convenient to carry in your bag. It's easy to apply using a brush or your fingers, and just a little product goes a long way. I would recommend this powder for people looking for one that disappears into your makeup without the heavy feel while mattifying your face and keeping your makeup intact for hours." - Marcie Linao

Best Loose Powder: La Mer The Powder, P5250, Rustan's

"From the packaging alone, you can tell right off the bat that it’s luxury in a jar. The texture is super fine and I love how it makes my skin matte without the white cast. I used it to set my liquid foundation or as a stand-alone powder to keep the oil at bay. If you're up for a splurge, this product won’t disappoint." - Kabbie Alipio

Best Matte Contour & Highlight: EB Advance Shade & Light Palette, P415, Department Stores

"The first time I applied it, I was surprised by how rich the color is. A little goes a long way! It's very economical compared to the other contour kits I've used. I use the lightest contour shade for my face and the two darker ones as eyeshadow. My favorite thing about the kit, though, is the yellow highlight powder. I use it as an overall correction powder because it's so perfect for my skin. I've never used anything else that's worked on me that well! I'd recommend it to my fellow morena girls! It's the first contour kit I've seen that caters to three different types of morena skin. I'm so thankful that a local brand finally released something that is the right color—nothing too red nor gray." - Joyce Buen

Best Cream Contour: Careline Contour Multi-Stick, P205, Department Stores

"I've tried the Careline Peach Stick before and thought that it was pigmented and easy to blend, so I was expecting the same thing from the Contour Stick. It was just as pigmented, which was great. The shade was pretty spot on for my skin tone, and the texture of the product worked well on the side of my cheeks, which are dry. I prefer applying it with a brush than directly swiping the stick onto my face. I blended very well, and I didn't have any problem layering on more product, since it didn't feel heavy. Overall, the product worked okay for me. It's perfect for an everyday look or a chill day out." - Kim Alivia

Best Powder Highlighter: Laura Mercier Face Illuminator in Indiscretion, P1850, Rustan's

"I've been seeing this product being raved about so I was really excited to try it! The packaging and the product itself is so pretty, and I love how there's a latch in the packaging. The shade is perfect for my skin tone, as I find most highlighters available in the market are a bit too light, which requires more blending on my part. I really love how the moment you apply this highlighter, it's there. This is the brightest among all my highlighters, and it lasts me most of the day! Although like most highlights it can emphasize texture, this product isn't particularly offensive. Would definitely recommend this! It's good for every day use and can be layered for a blinding metallic highlight." - Tricia Guevara

Best Powder Blush: MAC Mineralize Powder Blush in Dainty, P1850, SM Megamall

"This product was a pleasant surprise; shade-wise, I didnt think it would work because it had a lot of qualities I avoided in a blush which were pale cool tones and shimmers. But I tried it anyway, and as a morena, I really liked how the shade looked on me. I totally didn't expect it but it looked pretty natural and I was into the cool pale pink shade. The golden shimmer makes me look glowy as I wear it longer and it incorporates with my skin's natural dew. Longevity was pretty decent—I wore it for an entire school day and didn't feel the need to reapply. I also appreciate the pan size because it allows me to coat my brush in an even layer." - Jane Saquibal

Best Cream Blush: Revlon Insta-Blush in Rose Gold Kiss, P575, Watsons

"This blush is perfect to bring around, especially when you're traveling. The top closes well so you don't have to worry about it randomly coming apart while inside your bag (this has happened to me a lot with other similar products). It easily glides on the skin—I use a quick swab and lightly spread it on the cheeks. It has a shimmery glowing finish as well. Overall, it's good a nice, simple product for people who are into the natural look. You can use it on your cheeks, and even your eyelids if you wish to have a very light pink glow. It's quick and easy to use, and you can always easily pocket it if you wish to do a quick retouch within the day." - MM Vazquez

Best Liquid Blush/Lip and Cheek Tint: Chanel Lip Blush in 418 Rouge Captivant, P1950, Rustan's

"The product has mousse-y texture that looks quite thick while applying, but it dries down to a watercolor-like finish unlike popular water tints. The color I got also looks intense on the tube, but again, it applies really sheer and natural on the lips and cheeks. I prefer layering it on my lips, dotting each layer on the center and then dabbing the product all over to get that naturally plump look, then I'd swipe it on the back of my hand before using my fingers to tap it on my cheekbones. It blends seamlessly on my skin every time, no matter how many times I layered it (the most was five times). I didn't have to worry about looking like a clown even when I didn't have a mirror—the beautiful sheer finish just made me look rosy and healthy." - Regina Tabora

Best Makeup Tool: Shiseido Daiya Fude Face Duo, P2900, SM Megamall

"I thought this brush's concept was cool. The gel end is best used for applying foundation on your face when you don't want to use your fingers. No need to wash it unlike a sponge, which is extremely convenient when you're constantly on the move. Just spot clean and you're good to go! Meanwhile, I recommend the brush for thin foundations, setting powders, finishing powders, and bronzer. Its texture is very fine, on the softer spectrum of synthetic makeup brushes. This is great for traveling as you can do almost a full look with just this brush! If you have a full brush collection and want a brush for traveling or if you want to build a basic makeup brush collection, get this. Highly recommend this." - Theresa To

Best Eyeliner: K-Palette Real Strong Eyeliner, P945, Beauty Bar

"This product didn't disappoint. It claims to stay for 24 hours and it did! I started using it to parties and believe me when I say that it didn't move until I got home—it really didn't smudge or fade. Also, it dries fast so my monolid sisters out there don't have to worry about it smearing when they open their eyes after application. It's also buildable, so having oily eyelids, I was surprised it didn't give me any issues with dry ink patches. Overall, I thought I was living my geisha dreams with how smoothly this glides over my eyelids and gives me my sharp winged eyeliner." - Erika Dupali

Best Eyeshadow Palette: BYS Eyeshadow Palette Tin in Peach 2, P1199, Beauty Beat

"Compared to the original Peach palette which only had three matte shades, the Peach 2 palette contains six matte shades, six shimmer shades, and bolder and brighter colors! The pigmentation is spot-on with either fingers or an eyeshadow brush; a little product definitely goes a long, loooong way, so keep that in mind! Working with this was super fun because I was able to create such cute looks! I definitely went overboard on this one, but it's always fun to experiment! The results exceeded my expectations. For a drugstore product, this pan worked wonders. The best part? It lasted all day long! I myself was surprised. With or without eyeshadow primer or concealer, the shadows still stayed on my lids for hours and hours. It's crazy." - Yara El Arini

Best Eyebrow Product: Benefit Brow Contour Pro, P2100, Glorietta

"I think the concept of this is amazing! To get four products in something compact is something that I feel many people would appreciate. The quality of the product itself is up to par with other products from Benefit, so it did not disappoint in that department. I always ended up with noticeably polished brows! I'd probably use this with a full face of makeup, as this does not leave you with a lot of wiggle room to build color. But with a light hand, you'll get there! Its longevity is a plus, since it really does last long but it can be removed by your usual makeup remover. I would recommend this to someone who wants to get serious with their brow game!" - Katrina Redondo

Best Mascara: J. Cat Love Live Lash Waterproof Mascara, P399, Gateway Mall

"I think I may have found a new go-to mascara that's locally available! One coat gave me a really good lengthening, 'My Lashes But Better’ effect, while two coats provided more volume and more length. Another coat gave me clumpy, spider-like lashes. It holds a curl well under dry, non-humid conditions. It is very much waterproof as it claims to be, and it's also smudgeproof. An oil-based makeup remover works best when washing it off. Its plain packaging may be deceiving but if you're looking for a great lengthening mascara then this is definitely worth trying!" — Angelica Antonio

Best Lipstick Bullet: Sunnies Fluffmatte Lipsticks, P345, UP Town Center

"I love matte lipsticks but my lips don't wear them very well even with the best lip conditioners. The lipstick looked very dry—as expected from a matte lippie—that I thought the feeling would be the same on my lips. But no! I was amazed by how it glided on like butter. I like how it goes on evenly without having to apply much. It gives you that powdery finish. Coming from the word 'fluffmatte,' it feels weightless compared to other matte lipsticks. I would recommend this product if you are looking for beautiful shades similar to other high-end lipsticks at a good price." - Cindy Sanchez

Best Matte Liquid Lipstick: EB Advance LTD Liquid Lipstick, P185, Department Stores

"I was pleasantly surprised by this product! When I think of a liquid lipstick, I usually think of uncomfortably dry, cracked lips, but these don't give you that at all! They have a whipped, mousse-like consistency that feels creamy and smooth on the lips. They don't dry down completely though, so they're not transferproof—you'll definitely need to reapply after eating. My favorite shade is Skinny Dip because it's such a pretty pinky mauve. The packaging is so cute because the caps match the shades of the lipsticks! Overall, I think this is a great liquid lipstick! I'd recommend it for those who are looking for a comfortable and pigmented formula, but aren't too concerned about longevity." - Bea Bustamante

Best Glossy Liquid Lipstick: Revlon Colorstay Overtime Lip Color, P575, SM Beauty

"The thin, portable stick is practical, containing enough product for the price. It has two sides, one with the actual lip color and another with a clear gloss that keeps the product in place. Both applicators were small, allowing for a precise application regardless of the size of your lips. The colors were also exactly as they looked in the tube, which isn't the case for every lip product that I've used. More importantly, I was impressed to find that the lipstick survived a day and night's worth of sweat, oily food, and drinks without requiring any touch-ups. The darker shades cracked only a little on the very insides of my lips, while the pink slightly faded to a fresh-looking blush. It definitely lives up to its name." - Bea Racoma

FRAGRANCE

Bvlgari Omnia Pink Sapphire, P4020, Department Stores

"The scent is sweet, floral, and light with hints of vanilla musk and pink pomelo. Think biking around a park when the trees and flowers are in full bloom or lounging poolside listening to your favorite music with your friends. I’m really never one to wear an overpowering perfume so this was perfect for me. In my line of work where I meet business partners and go on regular trade checks, I don't want something that will stand out too much. This scent makes smell fresh without trying too hard and complements me in the best way possible. I do recommend wearing this more for special events. Since it's not too strong, the scent is still lively and uplifting, so it can be the icing on top of the cake of your look." - Cheenee Flordeliza

Carolina Herrera Good Girl, P7100, Department Stores

"Everything about this perfume was unusual and surprising. I was afraid that it would have a vertigo-inducing sweetness to it, but I am happy to report that the scent was sophisticated, grown-up, and I did not experience any vertigo. It constantly kept me guessing what notes I was smelling. Is it floral or spicy? Is it dainty or strong? Is it for fun or to be taken serious? All of the above? It's an interesting, feminine scent. At first spray, it can smell strong, citrus, and a little overpowering, so be careful not to overspray. But after a while, it transforms into a deeper and more wearable floral scent. I loved that the scent was dynamic! I would wear this as an evening perfume because it has a strong and long-lasting fragrance. It's a good perfume to wear if you don't want to smell too sweet or too dainty, but still want that floral scent." - Risa de Sagun

Jo Malone Mimosa & Cardamom, P7850, Greenbelt 5

"I wore this everyday at work while in the office or in the field, cause I'm in sales and I have to meet clients. On me, it lasts for around four to five hours. This has a very oriental and floral scent that is very relaxing and not too harsh on the nose. I like that it's simple yet still elegant—perfect for special date nights or sophisticated work dinners!" - Patty Bucao

Tom Ford Neroli Portofino, P12,600, Adora Greenbelt 5

"Neroli Portodino is citrusy, light, young, and unisex. It's not too overpowering, which is good because I usually can't stand strong perfumes. The scent reminded me of those baby colognes which sometimes can turn sour after prolonged use and sweating, but this held quite well and did not do that. For me, it's a daily perfume that you can wear to the office or casual events. I would recommend this to people who don't like overpoweringly floral or complicated scents. The bottle is really nice, too, so it will be a great addition to your vanity and since it's unisex, you can share it with your husband or boyfriend." - Jeanette Ipapo-Tuason
