Alexander McQueen’s aesthetic had always been a little haunted despite its grandeur and opulence. With that, designer Tina Gorjanc’s tribute collection to the late designer is only fitting and perhaps the ultimate way to honor McQueen. Aptly named “Pure Human,” Tina made a series of coats and bags made out of McQueen’s cloned skin.
While it seems that the task is unattainable, Tina was able to make this scientific leap through the help of a DNA lab. It created a material from McQueen’s regenerated skin using his hair sample, which Tina found from a piece of his Jack the Ripper collection. The lab was able to regenerate the said hair into a living tissue that could possibly get sunburnt if left outside for too long.
However, Tina revealed her other motive—besides honoring the beloved designer—in an interview, "The Pure Human project was designed as a critical design project that aims to address shortcomings concerning the protection of biological information. [It moves] the debate forward using current legal structures. If a student like me was able to patent a material extracted from Alexander McQueen's biological information as there was no legislation to stop me, we can only imagine what big corporations with bigger funding are going to be capable of doing in the future."
