Some think that one's taste in footwear is either black or white—one is either a high heel afficionado or a trainers gal. That's not if Ancuta Sarca has anything to say about it. The up-and-coming Romanian-born, London-based designer made her big debut at London Fashion Week last September, but she has been experimenting with footwear long before that. Ancuta mashes up old, discarded sneakers and sandals with kitten heels. The result is sustainable fashion at its most imaginative.
Aside from pre-loved sneakers, Ancuta also uses second-hand heels, which she sources from charity shops. "I have actually found a factory in Italy, which has agreed to help me upcycle and keep everything 100 percent environmentally conscious," she tells Dazed Magazine.
Her main purpose for creating this line of footwear was to solve the increasing waste generated by the fashion industry. "They were born as a solution to discarding them or producing new items and finding ways to reuse what is already there," she says. Apart from this sustainable practice, Ancuta uses her shoes to relay a deep sartorial message: "Each pair plays up juxtapositions of masculine/feminine and high-fashion/sportswear."
Ancuta Sarca's kitten heels are currently available at ln-cc.com. Prices start at 385 Euros or approximately P38,385.
