Work Wear Diaries: Sarah Robotham The British psychologist and woman behind "Fashion on the Couch" brings more of her individuality to work through clothes.

Audrey Hepburn once said, "A woman's beauty is not in her figure, in the way she dresses, in the clothes she wears, or in the way she does her hair. A woman's beauty is seen in her eyes, because they are the windows to her soul, the place where love dwells."

This is the statement British psychologist, Sarah Robotham, lives by. Here is the same kind of ardour one can expect to see in the image Sarah projects whether at work, on vacation and even in her blog, Fashion on the Couch. Her passion for work—and life in general—and apparent sense of individuality are characteristics that lend her the ability to seamlessly balance a healthy lifestyle. And sure enough—and quite effortlessly—innate beauty is reflected in her style and the way she carries herself.

What exactly do you do?

I work as a Counselling Psychologist for a private healthcare provider in London, UK.  I primarily provide individual and group psychotherapy to children and adolescents who are receiving in-patient treatment for a variety of emotional and psychological difficulties such as depression and self harm.

How did you get into this career path? Is this something you've always wanted?

I was certain that I didn’t want to work behind a desk looking at a computer screen all day.  As a Psychologist, my work is about meeting and relating to people face to face—I find what motivates people so interesting and I am lucky to have a job that I love and enjoy.

I knew I wanted to focus on training as a Psychologist when I took my undergraduate Psychology degree at the university and I felt I had the skills necessary to do the job. As a Psychologist, you need to be very self-aware and have a good understanding of individual and group dynamics to apply therapeutically.  I spend my day listening, talking and even dancing—I also run a creative movement workshop for my patients—and there is always a lot of variety in the work I do.  Being part of the complex process of change can be very satisfying even though the Psychologist role is a challenging one.

What's your daily routine/schedule like?

In the week, I wake up at 6:30am and I am in my office by 8:00am.  I have to write and check therapy notes and receive a handover from the nurses at the hospital about the young people I am working with. During the day I see patients for one to one psychotherapy and I am involved in large group therapy sessions as part of a therapeutic team.  Meetings and sessions can often be back to back. It is a busy treatment centre and I have to be on the ball with what is happening dynamically for my patients.

I generally leave work at 5:00pm and usually meeting a friend for a chat over a glass of wine or do some shopping to relax or I might hit the gym.  As a Psychologist, I think it is so important to have a healthy work/life balance so I maintain my energy for my patients.  In the late evenings I tend to browse the web to satisfy my passion for fashion—I might update my twitter page or take some photos for my blog.  I’m usually asleep by 11pm.
