Clutches come in all shapes and sizes, but at the end of the day, it all boils down to three things:
1. the event,
Is it a day or night event, a beach or a formal gathering?
2. the outfit
Don’t pair your neon jelly with a ball gown.
3. and the girl.
Now this is where it gets complicated. Some girls can survive with just a phone and a tube of lipstick, while others won’t last an hour without the entire troop.
From here on out, consider this series, WOMAN vs. CLUTCH, as your road-tester to help you figure out if an evening bag is the one for you, based on its accommodating powers. Through a scientific process (aka: stuffing a clutch until it can be stuft no more), we aim to answer the question: What will fit inside this purse? Hopefully, you’ll never have to accidentally destroy a latch for the sake of your compact, ever again.
First up on our series is the Emerald clutch from Calli. Hand carved, lacquered acacia wood with agate stones and gold closure, it's the kind of purse we'd bring to a black tie event like the Preview Ball.
The bag: Calli Emerald Clutch (P8000)
Total number of items: 9
Namely: Brow customized sword cut pencil and Linehunter Eyeliner, both from Majolica Majorca; Caviar Stick Eye Color and Paint Wash Liquid Lip Colour in Golden Peach, both from Laura Mercier; Aqua Smokey Lash mascara, MakeUp Forever; Lipstick in Tomboy, Tory Burch; Sugarfree mints, Wrigley's Doublemint; Multi-use palette, Inglot Cosmetics
Verdict: This is perfect for the girl who has an irrational phobia that her makeup will melt off her face. (A smokey eye hardly melts off your face.) It can fit the essentials namely a lipstick, concealer, and breath mints and still have spare room for a liner, a mini mascara, a brow pencil, lip gloss, and a blush that doubles as shadow. But - and this is a big but - there's no space for your mobile, unless it’s all you want to put in there. It’s fine though, holding a phone and a clutch is a fashion girl trick we've mastered. Now let me take a selfie!
