Did you know that the most expensive pearl ever sold costed 32 million dollars? We're talking about a teardrop-shaped pendant that had formerly donned the neck of Marie Antoinette, the ostentatious Queen of France during the French Revolution. 

But aside from having connections to rich historical figures, what exactly accounts for the ludicrous price of these precious stones that have celebs and royalty alike dripping in pearls from head-to-toe? It turns out, a lot of it has to do with the pearl's initial formation. There's a stark difference between the value of a natural pearl as opposed to a cultured one. Where cultured pearls are man-made, natural pearls are borne out of nature's own movements. Thus, its rarity explains a pearl's high price.
