1. Raw material costs and limited availability
Linen is derived from the flax plant, which requires specific growing conditions and cultivation practices. Flax also isn’t widely grown, resulting in a more limited supply compared to other materials like cotton or polyester.

2. Processing and production
Harvesting flax fibers is only the first step of the labor-intensive practice of making linen fabric. This is followed by retting, breaking, scutching, hackling, spinning, and weaving—all of which require skilled labor and specialized equipment, adding to the cost of input and production.

3. Environmental considerations
Given its cultivation process, linen has a minimal environmental impact. However, being an eco-friendly and sustainable option often requires additional investments in areas such as waste reduction and organic farming methods. These factors can lead to higher production costs—but ultimately help keep the fabric kind to the earth.
4. High quality and craftsmanship
Producing high-quality linen requires greater attention to detail and strict quality control. It involves the skilled work of artisans and rigorous testing procedures—factors that also contribute to higher production costs.
