What is argyle print?

Argyle is a pattern made of diamonds, usually multiple colored layers overlapping each other to add more texture and detail to a garment. This pattern originated from Scotland as an attempt to modify the usual checkered/plaid print that was used on kilts and banners. The term argyle is derived from the Argyll region of Scotland—where the print was created.

Despite being created in the 17th century, argyle was only considered fashionable after World War 1, thanks to Pringle of Scotland, a British fashion house. The pattern was even worn by the Duke of Windsor at the time during his golf sessions! In the 1960s, argyle made its way to preppy mini skirts and long socks. Meanwhile, in the 1990s, professional golfer Payne Stewart made argyle socks a part of his uniform, and was later used by fans to pay homage to the late golfer. Nowadays, we see the argyle as preppy, sporty, and overall chic!
