There’s a reason why black and white ensembles are deemed wardrobe staples: they’re easy to mix and match, and they’re always pleasing to the eye. If you think that black and white are a tad bit boring, well, think again. Veejay Floresca stepped up to the plate during the Panasonic Manila Fashion Festival Season 10 and stuck to these monochromes in her collection. The designer proved that black and white can be fun when you play with geometry. In this case, she says that oversized shapes are the way to go.

Most of the ensembles in her collection feature ovoid shoulders and trapezoid silhouettes with hems that flare at the bottom—there are a lot of A-line skirts and slits to give the body more breathing space. For example, a simple white sleeveless top is matched with an equally trapezoidal black leather skirt—proof that playing with proportions always has its sartorial freshness. Aside from that, the designer made sure to add zest to the large shapes by playing with textures such as fur, sequins, and even lace. If you think about it, it was as if a modern-day Cruella de Vil served as the inspiration.

Don’t get us wrong though, there’s nothing sinister about this collection. What we love about it is its heroic attempt not only to give power again to B&W but to make oversized shapes hip again (remember normcore?). One key piece that represented this would be the crisp white button-down shirt with flared black trousers, matched with an asymmetrical cape. How divine!

In essence, Veejay Floresca gave life to the forgotten glory of oversized silhouettes by providing many ways on how we could style such pieces. The designer even proved that maybe having a black and white wardrobe isn’t so bad after all...just go wild with your imagination and never be afraid of the big and bold!
