Trend Alert: The Scrunchie Renaissance

Does this hair elastic bring back childhood memories or is it better off left buried in the past?
Trend Alert: The Scrunchie Renaissance Does this hair elastic bring back childhood memories or is it better off left buried in the past?

It sucks to be a scrunchie. On one end you have the people who hate it and call it hideous. It’s that ugly piece of elastic they wore as a 6-year-old and to be caught wearing one would be mortal sin. On the opposite side however, are the few ones who like it for sentimentality’s sake with the strange comfort it gives.

Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) wears the mother of all scrunchies as part of her dress.

In 2012, shortly after Cara Delevingne and Suki Waterhouse modelled for My Crazy Scrunchie, designer Vivienne Westwood was convinced that the hair elastic would make a fashion comeback as she commissions the label to design a couple of looks for her Spring 2013 collection. Label Ashish also follows as it sends models down the runway with messy top knots secured by fluffy, metallic hair ties.

Fast forward to recent times, the Instagram account @scrunchiesofinstagram gains more than 4,000 followers as they feature celebrities like Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez, Lisa Kudrow, and the Olsen twins all caught wearing the infamous piece of accessory. Even Karl Lagerfeld joins in on the craze as he pulls Cara’s hair in a high pony for Chanel’s Fall/Winter 2014 campaign.

With all signs pointing to the scrunchie’s possible return, we try and convince ourselves that it might not be as bad as how some of us remember it. But do note that this trend isn’t for everyone. It takes a certain kind of girl to pull off a scrunchie–a striking personality who can carry her head high with this piece of fabric holding together her tresses–more in the likes of athletic or on-the-brink of eccentric type of girls.

With this piece of hair accessory slowly trying to peak once again, we wonder how many would actually welcome it back with open arms.

Karylle looked every bit glam in the Ezra frock and chandelier necklace. Aside from the fact that she wore it first, the frock also fit her best!

Paris Hilton for sure! it may seem over styled with her dangling earrings, necklace, and bracelets, but you can't deny that only Paris can pull that off.
