Trader Joe's is a beloved American grocery chain known for specialized offerings at affordable price points. There are hundreds of branches across the country, making it an identifiable component of everyday life in the U.S.A.

While the chain has yet to expand beyond the States, its products have already gained quite a following of their own. And while their peanut butter or potato chips are arguably the best sellers, it's their unassuming reusable tote bags that are getting global attention as of late.

Trader Joe's tote bags are as simple as they get: a capacious carrier made out of sturdy canvas, branded with their logo in bright red. It's marketed as "stylish and sustainable" as it encourages shoppers to repeatedly make use of it whenever they're on grocery runs. It retails for $3.99 at most branches, which is approximatelyunder P250.

Over the past year, the bags have become a collector's item within and beyond the United States. With the rise of the "analog lifestyle" and the increasing preference for "universal bags," it makes sense why a humble carrier has evolved into a fashion must-have. Everyone from K-pop stars such as Triple S' Jiyeon to our very own Amy Perez has been smitten by it!

One of the most apparent reasons the tote has become so popular is, ironically, its inaccessibility. One has to travel to the States—and thus, can afford a visa and a pricey plane ticket—just to cop one of their own. Either that, or they have relatives who can "pasabuy" for them instead.

Whether one resides in the Western hemisphere or not, the bag has become a status symbol that says, "Look at me, I've gotten a taste of the American dream!"

Where and How to Shop the Trader Joe's Tote Bags in the Philippines

In line with this, one has to be resourceful if they really want to get their hands on the coveted bag here in the Philippines. On its website, Trader Joe's lists the mini version of the piece at about P170, but this does not include shipping and handling fees, which could easily balloon costs. Also, the regular-sized version is presently sold out online.

Resellers have become the main proprietor for the bags. There are accounts on Shopee and Lazada that import the bags from the States and sell them for upwards of P1,000. There are also options to buy the bag secondhand from online retailers such as Facebook Marketplace and Carousell.

For those who have family overseas, it might be the best option to simply ask for the prized totes as pasalubong. They'll most probably be able to get it at its intended price tag!
