Much like the perfect nude lipstick, the perfect nude heels can be difficult to find—most especially because the very word 'nude' can mean different things to different people. There's a reason your fave foundation comes in hundreds of shades!
This is exactly why Jamela Acheampong founded luxury shoe brand Kahmune, which has come out with 10 different shades of nude heels! "I was in search of items that matched my dark skin tone, but all I kept coming across were the same beige, cream, and tan shades," she says in an interview with Elle. "It was overtly clear that 'nude' had a type."
"From the beginning, it's been about providing an option for all women," explains Jamela, who is of Ghanaian-American descent. "The idea of diversity, and more importantly, inclusivity, is still a huge problem in the beauty and fashion industries. The motivation was to provide nude shades to fit darker skin tones, but I thought it was important to ensure that all skin tones are represented."
Despite the 10-strong range of hues, Jamela still had to do some serious research. "I spent hours researching skin tones across the world," she says. "Settling on just 10 colors was no easy feat—I don't think people realize the amount of diversity found in skin pigments."
She also took care to be considerate of the slightest shifts in cool or warm tones: "For example, [the shade names] Goa and Bogota may look the same at first glance, but Bogota has more red undertones. The same goes for Rio and Gaborone."
If, like Jamela, you're tired of 'nude' only meaning one or two restrictive shades, check out Kahmune and their Instagram—pumps and sandals will be available for pre-ordering starting this February! We can't wait.
