Trends really do come and go, even for swimmies. While a holographic neon high-cut maillot might be the season's flavor, you won't be able to count on it forever—and this is where Wave Swimwear comes in! Owned by sisters Rae Dennis and Regine Dennis and their bosom friend Harumi Kimura, we stop for a quick chat with the girls on their fledgling brand. Take it from a trio of certified beach bums: These are the tasteful, understated suits you'll never stop coveting.
What sets you apart from other swimsuit brands?
"We believe that comfort and style should come hand-in-hand. We want our Wave Gals to enjoy the beach not just because they look stylish, but also because they can move around freely, be worry-free, and enjoy nature at its finest. We want to go beyond looking good for Instagram pictures because we want our Gals to look effortlessly good in and out of social media posts."
How would you describe Wave’s overall look and aesthetic?
"Stylish but classic pieces. The type of suit you can wear over and over again because of its timeless style, nonetheless will leave you with a handful of complements each time."
How did you start the brand? Tell us your story.
"We ourselves are beach lovers and bikinis get us excited all the time. We live for bikinis that fit us perfectly and allow us to look sexy in all the right places. There are some preferences that we’ve learned and understood over time, and those led us to start our own swimwear line. We were inspired to see the growing number of beach lovers like us and we thought that sharing our passion with them was such a fun and cool idea. Thus, the birth of our baby, Wave Swimwear."
Tell us about the suits! How many are there and how did you come up with the styles and color palettes?
"Each suit is inspired by a certain personality type. On our first launch, we released three styles that can cater to different kinds of girls with different kinds of swimsuit wants and needs. The Blaire, a maillot, was made for Wave Gals who prefer to look covered but still sexy. The belt was meant to accentuate the curves of the body while the back details allow the user to be more playful by tying it in three different ways. The Brooke, a bandeau-type suit, was more for those who want to keep it classy and feminine but a little sporty as well. The coverage it provides for the bust is perfect for those who are a little bit conservative while the ribboned back detail shows off a more feminine side. The Elena triangle bikini was made for girls who are not afraid to show a little bit more skin and who are on the edgy and sexy side. It’s not your typical triangle because it plays with lines and shapes—perfect for girls who are rather unconventional and are willing to take risks.
"As for the color palette, we wanted to keep it basic—the type you can wear anytime and on any occasion."
When can we look forward to a new collection?
"We’re cooking up something for everybody this coming holiday season, so stay tuned!"
