Remember when we dressed up with Heart and Sen. Chiz Escudero during the Star Magic Ball?
When it comes to weddings, there are those celebrities who leave everything out in the open for the public to indulge in while others prefer to keep things intimate. Somewhere in the middle of the spectrum is bride-to-be Heart Evangelista. While she shows no intentions of having her altar date with Sen. Chiz Escudero flashed on a big screen, she shares just enough info to keep us hooked. But now we ask: how do you get in?
Young designer Mark Bumgarner is of the select few to be invited, and for a very fashionable reason at that: he’s making her not one but two dresses! We asked how the 23-year-old managed to snag that gig, alongside more established names like Monique Lhuillier and Ezra Santos.
The first time Heart wore a custom Mark Bumgarner to an event was at the Pond's Beautiful Story Gala.
Step 1: Make friends with her stylist.
Just like every other relationship, you’ll need to find a bridge that will connect you to your person. For designers, the easiest would be going through the stylist. They’re always looking for clothes to pull for their celebrity clients so if one happens to ask you for something go ahead and lend it!
Mark made that connection when stylist Kat Cruz pulled out a couple of his dresses for Heart to wear. Guess she loved it so much that when she needed something to wear for the Pond’s Beautiful Story gala, he was at the top of her mind. “Ever since then she’d have something pagawa every month,” says Mark.
Tip: If you really want to get on their good side, give them options. Mark is making two dresses - one long and one tea length - for Heart to wear to her birthday celebration on the eve of the wedding, and for the reception afterparty.
Seeing that Heart loves corsets so much, Mark decided to make another corseted number when she came to him to dress her for the Hermes Silk Ball.
Step 2: Know what they love and love it too.
It helps to like the same things and to share the same aesthetic. A fondness for couture details, subtle femininity and corsetry are but a few things Mark and Heart have in common, so they really hit it off. “Heart really likes corsetry,” says Mark about the first time he fit her for a dress and adds “And now, everytime I design a dress, we're always trying to think of ways to make the corset more comfortable.”
Another thing they both have a sweet spot for—dogs. Heart even brought along her Pomeranian when she went to fit her dress. What cute playmates for Mark’s Chowchow, Schnauzer, and three French bulldogs. Cute!
Mark's personal fave of the two dresses he made for Heart's big day is this tea length number.
Step 3: Learn to keep their secrets.
There’s just so much to give of yourself when you’re a public figure like Heart. They value the very little privacy they get and appreciate friends who aren’t sell-outs. When we asked what else we could expect from Heart’s dress, the only thing Mark gave away was the length. (See above.) Guess we’ll have to wait for the wedding to see the final product.
