In case you missed it, actress Lovely Abella recently married her beau and fellow actor Benj Manalo. The lovely wedding gown she had on was a gift from her Hello, Love, Goodbye co-star Kathryn Bernardo. Now if that isn’t a cool enough tidbit, the fact that it was made in just two days is a true feat!TOP STORY: We're Obsessed with Lovi Poe's Effortlessly Chic Travel OOTDs in Los Angeles
We had to ask the bride and the gown’s designer, Steph Tan, all about it.
On having a wedding gown made in just two days
Lovely shared that she had a gown made in Pangasinan that arrived on Thursday, just 2 days before her weekend wedding. However, when she tried it on, she found that the dress was tight and the zipper broke. She was thinking of buying a ready-made wedding gown, but reveals that Kathryn, who had been asking about it, messaged her: “Minsan ka lang ikakasal, kaya pagawa tayo.”
Kathryn brought her stylist Jan Aranilla on board, and contacted designer Steph Tan to make a dress for Lovely. “I’ve worked with Kath for several projects and I’m just honored that she entrusted me to create the wedding dress of her dear friend,” Steph says, adding “It’s also heartwarming to know that Kath was giving Lovely such a meaningful and memorable gift for her big day.”
On deciding on an elegant, minimalist design
A group chat for the four of them was made for easy coordination. Lovely tells us that her only request was for the gown to have long sleeves. Jan provided a peg for the dress, and Kathryn suggested for the design to be backless, “para may skin ng konti,” says Lovely.
Steph created a classic yet modern design for the actress. It was a “minimalist style with a low V-neckline, sexy back detail, and bishop sleeves.” The three visited the designer’s studio so that Lovely’s measurements could be taken and to approve the silk chiffon fabric that was to be used. Steph also created a beautiful embroidered veil to match the minimalist design.
On creating and fitting the gown
By 6:00 p.m. the next day, Lovely was able to fit the unfinished gown. “’Di pa talaga tapos. Nag-fit lang para di na sila mahirapan kung may problema. Kumbaga, finishing nalang,” Lovely shares.
Steph tells Preview that Kathryn and Jan were also present during the fitting, showing they were with the bride every step of the way. She further reveals that she’s made pieces with similar silhouettes, so she wasn’t worried about being able to finish the gown on time. “Lovely is also a very fit and sexy bride so that made my job a lot easier,” she adds saying that the actress is “pleasant, fun, and a breeze to work with.”
On the final wedding gown
In just 2 days, Steph was able to create a wedding dress that fit Lovely perfectly. For the final fitting, 2 of the actress’ closest friends joined Kathryn and Jan for the big dress reveal. “They were literally shrieking with excitement as soon as she stepped out of the fitting room wearing the wedding dress,” Steph recalls. “The moment Lovely donned her embroidered veil while holding onto a faux bridal bouquet, everyone in the room just watched in awe as she transformed into a very beautiful bride”
“Yung pagkasimple niya pero elegante,” is what the bride loved best about her final gown. “Nung nag fit na kami, doon na nag sink in sa 'kin na ikakasal na ako. Sobrang ganda!”
We have to agree! Congratulations, Lovely!
