What’s the point of beauty pageants if not to empower women? Muna Jama, a Muslim beauty queen who’s competing in Miss Universe Great Britain, just made history by refusing to wear a bikini during the pageant’s swimsuit portion. “I wouldn’t wear a bikini to the beach, so I’m not going to wear one in a competition to score points,” she told Metro UK.
Instead of walking down the runway in a two-piece swimsuit like the rest of her fellow candidates, the 27-year-old contestant from London stood firm and argued that it goes against her religious beliefs. Instead, she wore a multi-colored kaftan accessorized with a silver choker and a pair of oversize hoop earrings.
It was a beautiful moment in the history of pageantry. And naturally, the internet couldn’t be prouder:
On her Instagram account, Muna took note of the importance of bravely making a stance for what you believe in. "This moment has proved that I am capable of almost anything I set my mind to and limitation is a status waiting to be changed," she wrote. "I thank everyone who stood beside me and believed in my vision."
She might not have won the crown, but she definitely stole the spotlight and won the people's hearts. You keep doing you, Muna!
