Last month, Barney's New York announced the coming of a special Fall collection that struck the chords of many a fashion heart. Aptly called "First Collection," the store will re-issue Jack McCoullough and Lazaro Hernandez's senior thesis collection as fashion design students at Parsons 10years ago. Yes, that collection—the one that Barney's famously spotted, bought and sold, and one that was the epic, fairytale beginning of Proenza Schouler as we know it.
The duo's meteoric rise to fame (and not one, but three CFDA Womenswear Designer of the Year awards, the latest of which is just this 2013) has been the subject of countless stories many found reading and re-reading. It's just so fascinating how two very young, hopeful designers—with only their talent going for them—were spotted amongst hundreds of aspiring hopefuls and given the chance to showcase their work on a global stage.
This is why we are very proud to annouce that the Preview Portfolio Project will finally set sail. Preview has been at the forefront of discovering up-and-coming fashion talent, from the Preview Fashion Talent Awards (PEFTA), our annual Creative It-List and, as recently launched in our June issue, the Ten Names You Need to Know feature. This venture only moves the team forward in discovering the best creative minds in the country.
Preview Portfolio Project has a simple, accessible yet unique concept behind it. Aspiring creative talents in the fields of fashion design, fashion writing, graphic design and illustration, fashion styling, hair, makeup, and photography can simply upload their best works in this online fashion portfolio. Each artist gets their very own page, where anyone (think: potential clients, interested collaborators, Preview editors, etc.) can have a look. Contact details are posted as well. To top it off, all contributors to the project have their names arranged both alphabetically and by profession, giving readers easy access to locate the person or service they need.
Roana Capaque, Preview's Managing Editor for Creative Solutions has this to say about the project: "The Preview Portfolio Project is a great venue for creative talents, regardless of age, to showcase their work. It not just helps aspiring talents, but also parties who are looking for talents. It's a win-win situation on both ends."
As the site flourishes, we are in high hopes that this will be a creative space where we could find talents to tap, individuals to hone, and people to work with. This, after all, was borne out of Preview's desire to feature new talents and who knows, pave their way for a space in the fashion industry. We know you're out there!
