We don’t just limit ourselves to designer threads when talking about great clothes. Yes, the design plays a huge part but so does construction. (After all, nothing else comes close to a well-made shirt or suit.) In light of the Holy Father’s birthday on Saturday, we take a closer look at his tailor who makes nothing but good garments. Summit’s special commemorative edition of Our Pope zooms in on Ditta Annibale Gammarelli, the official tailor of The Pope.
History starts with Giovanni Antonion Gammarelli, who with his team of well-skilled tailors, has been dressing up clergymen since 1798. Six generations of Gammarellis have had the great honor of dressing up the Vatican’s most eminent. And today, Lorenzo Gammarelli is at the helm of it all as he dresses none other than Pope Francis.
Having been around for over two centuries, Gammarelli is known for making the best chasubles, capes, and even hats worn by bishops, cardinals, and priests. Another fun fact is that they also produce socks which have tickled the fancy of civilians and even editors such as Vogue’s Hamish Bowles. Cool, right?
