National Artist Pitoy Moreno was the honoree of the latest Metrowear gala, held last week at the Isla Ballroom of EDSA Shangri-La. The esteemed designer exhibited 50+ of his best Filipiniana pieces from his astounding body of work, which has been recognized and admired not only within our shores, but on an international scale as well.
The show started with a six-look suite of contemporized tribal ensembles of intricately beaded tops paired with chic lamé tapis. Accessories include rope belts spangled with seashells, and elaborate coral and shell headpieces.
What followed was an assemblage of the traditional pañuelo-draped Maria Claras, barong Tagalog cut from piña, and more traditional costumes from the different regions of the archipelago. And as expected, a grand selection of the designer's famed ternos—both classics and modernized ones—made their way onto the catwalk, giving the gala audience a generous display of the craft and creativity of the National Artist.
Lastly, the show closed with a repertoire of Pitoy's cloaked and veiled looks, with models garbed in meticulously embellished and embroidered gowns paired with oversized shawls, threadworked cloaks, and gossamer veils. The gowns boast of artful handiwork and a graceful transition from classic cuts and silhouettes to more contemporary, of-the-moment designs, proving that Pitoy, more than ever, holds his vaulted status as one of the country's greatest living artists and staunchest champions of art, craft, and beauty.
