There are two kinds of packers in this world: the first just dumps everything she thinks she’ll need for the trip inside her overnight duffel, and the second packs by the outfit, calculating just how much she can squeeze into her hard shell trolley while still leaving space for what’s to be purchased.

In this month’s Fashion Workshop, Preview’s Fashion Director Daryl Chang, along with a few other editors, schools us on the science of stylish packing as they share their secrets to stashing things inside their luggage. Here’s what we learned from the master class:

TIP #1:  KEEP ROLLIN’

“I roll and rearrange clothes into a line…I feel that bundling things feels more compact.”

Like Daryl said, it’s all about keeping things compact. Fit whatever you can in one bag but do try to leave some room for the return trip.

TIP #2: REPEAT ITEMS ONE, TWO AND THREE

“Each packed item gets double exposure which significantly reduces the volume of clothes needed by half.”

The Duchess of Cambridge does it, why shouldn’t you?

TIP #3: POWER UP

“A power strip with multi-sockets equals only one adaptor for all gadgets.”

Scenario: your laptop, tablet, and smartphone are all running low on batt and you only have one electric socket in your hotel room.

TIP #4: TAKE THE EXTRA BAGGAGE

“Because the total baggage allowance is not confined to just one checked-in luggage, I always tuck in two packaways for unforeseen (yeah, right) shopping.”

Going back to the first tip, if you just can’t leave home without your entire wardrobe/vanity cabinet the least you could do is stash an extra bag for the pasalubongs. This extra carry on can also be used for keeping dirty clothes on your way back.
