With its strict heels-only policy for the ladies and an unofficial selfie ban, it would seem as if the higher ups at the Cannes Film Festival were trying to suck the life out of the party. But despite the odd totalitarian dress code, Hollywood’s A-list still found a few loopholes as they tried to out-sheer, out-slit, and out-cut-out each other on the red carpet. And while flashing skin may be the best way to beat the heat, we appreciate a good frock that doesn’t reveal too much. Herewith, our top looks from this year’s film festival.

We’ll always have a soft spot for a good roomy dress. Cate Blanchett attends the Carol premier wearing a strapless ball gown from Giles’ Fall 2015 collection, simplifying the look by opting to wear it without the post-Elizabethan-inspired jacket it came with on the runway.

Saving the skin-flashing for a different day, Emily Blunt attends the Sicario photo call dressed in a long-sleeved, below-the-knee Peter Pilotto dress.

This leg-flashing strapless Georges Hobeika looks like butter on 30-year old model Izabel Goulart, creamy and oh-so good.

One dress, two looks: Kendall Jenner proves you don’t need a second frock to take you from the red carpet to the after party. As the sun disappeared, so did the long flowing train of her Calvin Klein Collection outfit, and she ended the night in a short figure-hugging dress.

It takes a lot of personality (and a hot body) to pull off a quirky dress such as this sheer kite Valentino gown and Sienna Miller is just the right person to do that.
