The Art Of Fashion

Avel Bacudio's first benefit art exhibit.
The Art Of Fashion Avel Bacudio's first benefit art exhibit.

We first got wind of Avel Bacudio's fashion sketches in April this year. The designer, having undergone an operation for retinal detachment condition, used the proceeds from the 20”x20” watercolors to help raise funds to buy spectacles for visually impaired street children. For RP-UK Friendship Week 2009, Avel teamed up with the British Alumni Association (BAA), the British Embassy Manila, and the British Council, presenting “Art Exhibit for a Cause: An Exhibition by Avel Bacudio.” The proceeds from the sale of this new set of fashion illustrations is meant to benefit the BAA's fund for disadvantaged children as well as the victims of the recent typhoons.

“Each design represents the Pinaylahat ng personalidad ng Pilipino na babae,” shared Avel in a brief interview. Each of the four-piece sets is titled after special traits like “Gabriela ng Silangan,” “Lipad Pinay,” “Saplot sa Katawan,” “Kaladkarin,” “Sosyal,” and “Papel na Damit.” One set called “Surbaybor,” which was purchased by Qualibet's Pinky Tobiano, who herself is a cancer survivor. Designer Tina Daniac in turn bought a piece entitled "Lila" on opening night.

The exhibit will remain at the mezzanine of Shangri-La Plaza mall (EDSA corner Shaw Boulevard, Mandaluyong City) until the end of the week. Drop by to have a look and perhaps make your own purchase/contribution as it costs P30,000 for a set of four.
