The term "style" is typically defined as a form of self-expression, and rightly so. Clothing has always been more than function and aesthetics, but rather, a means for people to embrace and flaunt their personalities in ways that make them feel good. When it comes to “fashion,” however—and the topic of Emily in Paris enters the conversation—you’ll hear people rave (or rant) about the outfits worn by ringarde Emily (Lily Collins) or uber-cool Camille (Camille Razat).

But it’s about time we put the spotlight on Sylvie Grateau, the feisty leader of marketing agency Savior. Played by Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu, 50-something Sylvie is often seen wearing minimalist pieces typical of French cool-girl style, from little black dresses, blazers, to pencil skirts. Although she likes to keep it timeless and sensual, she’s not afraid to push the boundaries of what those definitions are. Sure, Emily and Camille love playing with trendier pieces and have their own distinct tastes, but Sylvie shows us that dressing up knows no age. The truth is, we’re always evolving and so does our style–and that’s something worth celebrating!

Here are 10 looks from Sylvie that will inspire you to keep experimenting with fashion:

1. She may not favor loud colors and patterns, but Sylvie knows what makes her feel good–and sometimes (or most of the time), that’s simply a white buttondown and a pencil skirt paired with stiletto heels. Tres chic!

2. It’s not difficult to notice that Sylvie loves in black, but we like how she’s always reinventing her looks by throwing on unexpected pieces with varying textures–like this shimmery gold piece cinched with a leather obi belt. Is that a velvet blazer worn as a cape? J’adore!

3. Another black number, but if there’s anything you should know about Sylvie it’s that she doesn’t stick to a rule book. She loves flaunting a bit of skin but keeps it intriguing by only featuring certain body parts–like her shoulders in this trumpet-sleeved frock.

4. Power dressing but make it modern. Sylvie dons a crimson dress with subtle butterfly sleeves that call to mind the bold shoulders of the ‘80s. Red’s a very French girl accent color, and we love how she embraced it by adding a pop of tortoise shell earrings.

5. Is brown dreary? Sylvie proved otherwise in this monochromatic chocolate brown outfit featuring a fringed zip-up jacket (for texture, of course) and straight-cut trousers. The best part? She took us by surprise by throwing on a Roger Vivier leopard print handbag–and it works. This is seriously making us rethink our future airport looks.

6. If you said the word peplum now, we’re sure many fashion fans would cringe as they remember the long-gone trend. However, Sylvie isn’t afraid of reinventing the wheel–and apparently the answer to pulling off a peplum in this day and age is to wear one in gray. Consider it a fresh alternative to your go-to pantsuit. It’s fun and flirty too!

7. A military-inspired jacket wouldn’t usually come to mind when fancier occasions arise, but we love how Sylvie chose one that still reflected her personal style–it accentuated her figure and lent that sharp-shouldered look she’s obsessed with. The tip you can get from this? Don’t be afraid to don a jacket on top of a dress!

8. Who said green and a little sheen don’t mix? Sylvie turns up the holiday spirit in a green blouse and metallic pantsuit–and she definitely stole the show. Check out how she opted for her favorite buttondown silhouette but played it up with color and texture–a tactic you can adopt to refresh your go-to looks!

9. Who could forget this jawdropping look? Ever the fan of slitted skirts, Sylvie’s not afraid to show some serious leg, but what’s great about this outfit is the contrast provided by the one-sleeved bodice. A reminder that visual balance is key to making an impact. But more than that, we love how she embraced her inner fierceness!

10. Although Sylvie prefers to rock sexy, edgy outfits, she also likes to experiment with the other side of the spectrum through romantic pieces like this divine combo: a jet black column dress worn with a draped cream scarf around her shoulders. It’s effortlessly elegant yet unique–two words that might best describe Sylvie herself.
