Swimwear isn't excluded from the cycle of trends that characterizes this crazy world of fashion. Each year, we see swimsuits evolve to reflect our changing moods and preferences. (Remember those halter necklines of 2017?) Well, this year's crop of au courant swimsuits point to our obsession with the '80s, minimalism, and romanticism (a spill-over from 2019). Oh, and we're also happy to report that there's a bevy of bold prints and cuts that will make any adventurous fashionista absolutely thrilled.
If you ask us though, the best thing about this summer's lineup is the wide variety of silhouettes that will flatter any body type. From high-cut bikini bottoms, well-designed one-pieces, to sleek neutral tones, there's a swimsuit out there for you. It's only a matter of choosing which one! To ease your shopping process and to keep you in the loop, check out all the hottest trends we're eyeing below:
A subtle detail that's been making waves and taking over our feeds is textured fabric! From wavy 3-D designs, seersucker fabric (which is crinkled and puckered), to all-out ruching, these textile elements instantly elevate any plain old swimsuit. No wonder celebrities can't get enough of it!
For those who like their swimwear sweet and dainty, perhaps this year's sleeved swimsuit trend floats your boat! While long-sleeved suits are great for protecting your arms against the harsh sun, we particularly like the bikini tops with cute cap sleeves that are slightly pleated or ruffled.
One emerging bikini trend that we're sure will hit peak popularity soon is the bikini bottom with a wraparound overlay. We've already seen Coleen Garcia and Rhea Bue flaunt their pieces in nude and copper tones, but we think the design will make quite the splash in bold colors, too. Imagine the piece in jewel tones... Ugh, swoon!
Trippy tropical prints dominated the Spring/Summer 2020 runways as seen in Fendi and Peter Pilotto, and it seems that swimwear has also caught the flora and fauna fever. Whether you're into lush foliage, batik prints, or funky patterns, the rule of thumb is to go bold or go home.
High-cut bikini bottoms
A trend we never expected would go mainstream is the high-cut bikini, which obviously takes a serious dose of sartorial stamina to pull off, as the piece is quite revealing. If you're a little iffy about it, Camille Co, Laureen Uy, and Kylie Verzosa have tested the waters for us and here's what they suggest: Try a one-piece suit first! You can then ease your way into a high-cut two-piece once you're up for it.
An oldie but goodie, nude-colored swimsuits are still classic pieces to own, but this year, update your collection with warm tones like copper and terracotta, or rich colors like chocolate brown and burgundy. Choose a hue that will best suit your skin tone for maximum impact!
Everyone totally devoured animal print swimsuits last year, but this summer's iterations feature sleeker, sexier shapes, like Maggie Wilson's triangle bikini and Nicole Andersson's high-cut one-piece. Leopard seems to be the print du jour, but we suggest trying out other fierce prints (zebra, tiger, python) in different colorways to really stand out.
High-waisted bikinis in clean cuts and simple colors will continue to be a huge trend, but there's a celebrity-approved iteration that you have to watch out for: the one-piece suit with waist cutout! It's literally your favorite bikini and maillot rolled into one, and what's so great about it is that it flatters any body type!
The citrusy color made an appearance on the runways of Bottega Veneta and Valentino, and this summer, tangerine is here to ensure your seaside vacation is nothing but sunny. Whether you cop the color via bikini or one-piece, we're sure you'll be snapping some pics once you discover that it matches your morning mimosa.
For a unique swimwear look, go for the hot-right-now underwide bra, which hasn't hit mainstream popularity yet. Aside from providing your bust with maximum support, it also lends a retro vibe that reminds us of '50s pin-up girls! We suggest donning one in a solid color to let the silhouette do the talking.
French cut bikini
Ahhh, now this one isn't for the faint of heart. We're touting this as the wildcard trend as it may be a little risqué for people's tastes, what with it's teeny tiny triangle for a bottom. It's quickly becoming an Instagram piece, though, so if you're game enough to go more than leggy on the beach, then we suggest making a statement in bright colors like Patricia Henson and Dua Lipa's blue suits.
