Intimidated by prints? They're actually easier to wear than you think!

I have a confession to make: I used to dislike prints. Back in college, I preferred plain shirts and never would have considered printed trousers. I deemed the color story, silhouette, and fabrication more important than prints and patterns. I was wary they would draw way too much attention on me.

Call it a change of heart—or maybe it was the influence of working in the fashion industry—but now I've grown to like wilder patterns and more graphic designs. I have to admit, though, it was a struggle in terms of how to actually wear them without looking tacky or too eccentric. But lucky for you, I've managed to compile some tricks and tips that I've learned along the way. Master these guidelines and you'll be a print-on-print pro in no time!

1. Switch up your accessories.

If you're still on the fence about wearing prints, we suggest you start small as you ease into it. Why not try printed socks in lieu of plain ones? Or, perhaps add a printed scarf to complete your look?

4. Match colors, not prints.

Unsure about print mixing? Here's an easy tip: Don't mind the print and focus on the color instead. If you need to look polished, opt for tonal colors. If you're after a statement-making outfit, consider contrasting colors to stand out.

5. Texture counts, too.

Complement your prints with a statement texture, say, a pair of leatherette pants, a sequined skirt, or a tweed jacket!

6. Wear similar prints.

When in doubt, you can always pair two pieces in the same print. Stripes on stripes? Check on check? You can't go wrong.

7. Mind the print proportion and size.

It's not just the color or the actual print that you have to watch out for. Sometimes, the pattern size and scale can make or break the ensemble as a whole. Remember that the more spaced out the prints, the wider you look.
