We all have different sartorial preferences but more often than not, we can claim that our mothers have built the foundation for our love of fashion. Proof: The mother-daughter tandem of Jenni and Aryanna Epperson bespeaks the special bond they have especially when it comes to dressing up. This year, we asked them to take us behind the scenes as they prep up for the Preview Ball. These picture-perfect moments tell us that style is, indeed, passed down from parent to offspring.
1. Describe your "Geek on Fleek" outfit for the Preview Ball.
Aryanna: My outfit is a throwback to my high school glory days but with a more updated twist: geeky glasses from Uniqlo, a white polo under a casual t-shirt dress, and Mary Jane heels, all from Forever 21, and a striped bag from Kate Spade. My inspiration is that geek you find in the school canteen, which is really me.
Jenni: Geeks usually try to blend in the crowd and that's what I did—I wore black and a pair of thick framed eyeglasses from Uniqlo to be inconspicuous. I did some quick retail therapy a day before the Preview Ball and fell in love with an unusual long bomber jacket from Bershka (I just ruched it all the way up for better proportion). I also bought a faux beaded collar from The Landmark as I can't imagine layering a real shirt under the jacket as it can get hot. The bag is my Louis Vuitton Alma BB Monogram Vernis. I also borrowed Aryanna's pleated skirt and paired it with opaque stockings and flatform lace-up shoes.
2. Who did your makeup and what was the look you were going for?
A: I did my own makeup (with the help of some YouTube video tutorials)! I've always enjoyed putting it on myself. I kept it simple and glowy and topped it off with a dark red lipstick.
J: I'm so glad Aryanna is skilled in doing makeup so I asked her to do mine. Basically, my face was in her hands.
3. When it comes to prepping up for big events, do you follow any particular ritual?
A: When it comes to prepping for the night, having the perfect playlist is essential. It sets the mood and vibe for the night and hypes us up!
J: I always play tunes when dressing up. I need a soundtrack for my outfits!
4. What's the best thing about getting dressed with your mom/daughter?
A: The best thing about getting ready with my mom is that we both have fun pampering each other, may it be getting our nails done, putting on face masks, or doing each other's makeup. We always got each other's back.
J: Aryanna and I have a good mother-and-daughter dynamic and that extends to fashion and beauty. Who better to critique and compliment at the same time than family?
5. Share with us a fun moment that happened during your prep time.
A: No matter how much fun we have dressing up and getting made up, nothing beats a "Spaghetti Break." In the middle of doing my makeup, my mom brought up to my room some of her famous sweet spaghetti, which she knows I love.
J: Spaghetti Break! We literally, dropped everything to eat sweet spaghetti.
