A frothy pink, fully-beaded Francis Libiran frock was the talk of the town last Saturday when Maine Mendoza wore the gown during Eat Bulaga’s #AlDubEBTamangPanahon event at the Philippine Arena. Why so? All because Kim Chiu “wore it first.” But while that issue’s been settled by Maine's stylist, Liz Uy, another controversy has popped up online putting Liz on the hot seat once again.
Blogger Fashion Pulis was quick to call Liz out, claiming that for Preview’s November 2015 cover shoot, she made Maine wear the same jacket featured in the stylist’s OOTD posted on her Instagram account (@lizzzuy) in October. The title of his blog post read, "Liz Uy makes Maine Mendoza wear [the] same jacket she wore weeks ago in Preview photo shoot." The piece in question: a black tweed jacket with red and blue knitted trim from Gucci’s Cruise 2016 collection.
Gucci's Cruise 2016 tweed jacket, now available in stores.
An incidental twinning is certainly not a mortal sin, but to put this issue to bed once and for all, we'll just go ahead and say it: Maine Mendoza wore this Gucci jacket for Preview’s cover shoot before Liz posted her own photo wearing the jacket.
Those who've had the chance to read the lengthy team credits posted in the captions of the cover images on our Instagram and Facebook will find that it wasn’t even Liz who styled the November cover. It was her brother Vince Uy, contributing creative director for Preview, who styled both Maine and Alden Richards for the shoot. The clothes worn by Maine, all from Gucci, were flown in exclusively for the cover shoot dated September 30, 2015.
The team painstakingly arranged the logistics, securing the availability of both cover stars Maine and Alden, and requesting for the samples to be flown in from Gucci’s regional office. According to Preview Executive Editor Isha Andaya-Vallés, who produced the cover shoot, Vince himself handpicked the runway looks he wanted AlDub to wear for the cover shoot, saying it was only fitting to dress the It show biz couple in threads from the hottest designer in fashion today, Gucci's Alessandro Michele.
It wasn’t until around the first week of October that Liz posted her Instagram photo sporting the same jacket. Since Liz was not present at the cover shoot, and Preview is strict about the confidentiality of cover story photos (yes, this applies even to former editors and siblings), Liz could not have known that Maine had worn the same piece in one of the six layouts she had for the shoot. We tried to reach Liz for a comment but she is presently abroad.
Liz's outfit post was featured on Style Bible on the 11th of October as part of a roundup of celebrity OOTDs taken within the same week of the month.
Isha explained further, “Since these clothes are in-demand, we really had to book well in advance. That’s why sticking to our September 30 shoot date was so important, because we only had the clothes with us for that one day.”
Taking into consideration the above-mentioned facts and if we are to base it on the timeline, Maine was clearly the first to have worn the Gucci jacket, which was the root of the current controversy. Liz may have been the first to post the photo online, but this was only because Preview had to wait until November before revealing the photos of its cover girl. Now, have we set the record straight? We sure hope so.
