While the rest of the fashion world has Spring/Summer, Autumn/Winter, and Resort Wear collections, here in the Philippines we have what we proudly call Tropical Wear. Being that tropical country lets us enjoy the sunny weather almost all year round, even allowing us to take out-of-town trips and beach getaways at any given time. This is why Manila Wear, spearheaded by international fashion designer Josie Natori and a component of Manila FAME that’s organized by the Center for International Trade and Expositions (CITEM) and the Garments and Textile Industry Office (GTIDO), is pushing the country’s finest Tropical Wear collections in its upcoming event.
Manila Wear is unveiling summer-inspired fashion pieces under the theme, “Urban Resort,” for its bi-annual presentation from March 14 to 17, 2014 at the SMX Convention Center. There’s going to be a series of exciting collaborations and exhibitions featuring the Filipino’s mastery of indigenous materials and heritage handiwork. It will also showcase the contemporary interpretations of traditional design methods of designers like Amina Aranaz-Alunan, Carissa Cruz-Evangelista, Maco Custodio, Lally Dizon, Natalya Lagdameo, Adante Leyesa, Joyce Makitalo, Arnel Papa, Malou Romero, Ken Samudio, and Nicole Whisenhunt. Meanwhile, designers Jun Artajo, Tipay Caintic, Joel Escober, Twinkle Ferraren, Anne Marie Saguil, Lulu Tan-Gan, and Filip+Inna's Len Cabili will display their latest collections of intricately handcrafted apparels.
Now on its third year, this initiative not only affirms that our local fashion labels can be competitive in the world stage, but it also proves how our fashion sense can be both Filipino and global at the same time.
