For his latest exhibition entitled Autobiography, artist Gian Cruz renders himself in a series of “self-portraits” with stand-ins performing as him. The project aptly named You as Me showcases 200 different portraits of men and women sporting what seems to be the artist’s uniform (a double-breasted jacket, dress shirt, slim tie, and wayfarer specs), taking directions from him as they try to give the camera their best impression of Cruz.
He says, “The thing with this process is that it leads to many gaps and inconsistencies that lends it its own particular strength which very much coincides with how contemporary visual culture is in the context of the present—chaotic, volatile, inconsistent.”
